US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin Back in Action After Medical Treatment

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has made a successful recovery and returned to his full duties after receiving treatment for prostate cancer and a bladder issue. He underwent surgery in December and was briefly admitted to intensive care for the bladder issue but has since been discharged from the hospital. Austin will work from home before returning to the Pentagon later this week.

Washington, February 14 (AP): United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was discharged from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Tuesday, concluding his second hospital stay following surgery for prostate cancer treatment. The Pentagon announced that Austin, 70, has fully resumed his official responsibilities.

Ongoing Health Issues

Austin has faced continuous health challenges since undergoing surgery in December. On Sunday, he was readmitted to Walter Reed due to a bladder issue and was subsequently placed in intensive care for the second time. On Monday, he underwent a non-surgical procedure under general anesthesia.

Bladder Issue Addressed

Austin's medical team, comprising Dr. John Maddox, Trauma Medical Director, and Dr. Gregory Chesnut, Director of the Center for Prostate Disease Research at the Murtha Cancer Center, clarified on Tuesday that the bladder problem was directly related to the surgery. They emphasized that it was unrelated to his cancer diagnosis and would not impact his excellent cancer prognosis.

Working from Home

Acting on the advice of his doctors, Austin will temporarily work from home before returning to the Pentagon later this week. The Pentagon confirmed that his residence is fully equipped with the necessary unclassified and classified communication systems to effectively carry out his duties.

Virtual Meeting on Ukraine

Despite the temporary setback, Austin is scheduled to host a virtual meeting on Wednesday with approximately 50 countries that convene monthly to coordinate military assistance for Ukraine. Originally, he had planned to travel to Brussels for this meeting, followed by a quarterly gathering with NATO defense ministers on Thursday. However, US Ambassador to NATO Julie Smith will represent Austin in Brussels.

Previous Hospitalization

In January, Austin spent two weeks at Walter Reed after experiencing complications from the initial surgery. At that time, his doctors had indicated that they did not anticipate another prolonged hospital stay.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's resilience in overcoming health challenges demonstrates his unwavering commitment to serving the nation. As he resumes his full duties, the United States can rest assured that its defense apparatus remains in capable hands.
