Latakia Explosion from Syrian Civil War Ordnance Results in 16 Fatalities and Injuries
In the coastal city of Latakia, Syria, a tragic incident occurred when ordnance from the ongoing 13-year conflict exploded, causing a building to collapse. The Syrian Civil Defense, also known as the White Helmets, reported that they worked through the night to recover 16 bodies, including five women and five children. Additionally, 18 individuals sustained injuries in this unfortunate event.

The explosion took place in a metal scrap storage area located on the ground floor of a four-story building. This incident highlights the ongoing dangers posed by unexploded ordnance in Syria. The United Nations reported in February that over 1,400 unexploded devices have been safely disposed of since December, with numerous minefields identified across various regions.
Hezbollah Accusations and Denials
In another development, the Syrian Defense Ministry accused the Lebanese Hezbollah group of crossing into Syria and killing three soldiers. This incident allegedly occurred near northeastern Lebanon, where clashes between Syrian forces and Lebanese clans were reported last month. Hezbollah has denied any involvement in these killings.
Local Lebanese media have also reported Syrian shelling on the northeastern Lebanese border town of Al-Qasr. In response to these events, the Syrian Defense Ministry stated it would take necessary measures against Hezbollah's actions, describing them as a dangerous escalation.
Violence in Latakia Province
Latakia province has recently experienced increased violence following an ambush on a security patrol by gunmen loyal to Bashar Assad. The government's counter-offensive, supported by allied factions, managed to suppress the insurgency but resulted in significant destruction and retaliatory attacks against the Alawite community.
The clashes and revenge killings have led to over 1,000 deaths. This surge in violence underscores the ongoing instability in Syria's coastal regions and the challenges faced by communities affected by the conflict.
Despite efforts to address unexploded ordnance and restore stability, incidents like these highlight the persistent threats faced by civilians in Syria. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely as efforts to secure peace and safety for residents remain ongoing.
