LA County Wildfires May Become Costliest Natural Disaster in US History with Estimated Losses
The wildfires that erupted this week in Los Angeles County continue to burn fiercely. These fires are expected to rank among the most expensive natural disasters in US history. At least 11 people have died, and over 12,000 structures have been destroyed since Tuesday. Entire neighbourhoods, once filled with multimillion-dollar homes, have been reduced to ashes.

AccuWeather has provided a preliminary estimate of the damage and economic losses, ranging from USD 135 billion to USD 150 billion. This figure is compared to the USD 225 billion to USD 250 billion in losses caused by Hurricane Helene last fall. Jonathan Porter, AccuWeather's chief meteorologist, stated, "This will be the costliest wildfire in California modern history and also very likely the costliest wildfire in US modern history, because of the fires occurring in the densely populated areas around Los Angeles with some of the highest-valued real estate in the country."
Economic Impact and Insurance Estimates
AccuWeather's estimates consider various factors such as damage to homes, businesses, infrastructure, and vehicles. They also account for immediate and long-term health care costs, lost wages, and supply chain disruptions. Aon PLC, an insurance broker, also indicated that these wildfires might become the most expensive in US history but did not provide a specific estimate. Previously, the Camp Fire in Paradise, California, was considered the costliest wildfire at USD 12.5 billion when adjusted for inflation.
The fires have been exacerbated by hurricane-force Santa Ana winds and severe drought conditions. As of Saturday, they remain largely uncontained. This suggests that the final tally of losses could rise significantly. "To put this into perspective," Porter added, "the total damage and economic loss from this wildfire disaster could reach nearly 4 per cent of the annual GDP of the state of California."
Geographic and Human Impact
Moody's analysts have also concluded that these wildfires will likely be the costliest in US history due to their impact on densely populated areas with high-value properties. Historically, California's major wildfires have occurred in less populated inland regions, resulting in less destruction per acre and affecting less expensive homes.
This time is different as large fires have swept through areas like Pacific Palisades and Malibu. These regions are home to many Hollywood celebrities and executives with multimillion-dollar properties. Numerous celebrities have already lost their homes to these fires. Moody's report highlighted "the scale and intensity of the blazes, combined with their geographic footprint," indicating a significant human and economic toll.
It may take several months before an accurate financial assessment of these wildfires can be made. Porter noted that "we're in the very early stages of this disaster." The ongoing situation underscores the immense challenges faced by communities affected by these devastating fires.
