2,000 Ukrainians Run in Kyiv Marathon to Honor Defenders
Around 2,000 Ukrainians ran in a one-kilometer race in Kyiv, wearing bibs displaying the name of a person instead of a number. Each runner chose one person to whom they dedicated their run. The race was hosted by Nova Post, Ukraine's most prominent private delivery company, with the dual purpose of honoring the defenders and raising funds to bolster Ukraine's air defense system.
In a touching display of unity and resilience, around 2,000 Ukrainians took part in a one-kilometer race in Kyiv on Sunday. What made this race unique was that instead of numbers, the runners' bibs displayed the names of individuals they were dedicating their run to—spouses, children, friends, siblings, neighbors, and colleagues who had been killed, taken captive, or injured during Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine.
A Race for a Cause

Amidst the lively backdrop of Ukrainian songs, joy, and sorrow intermingled in the air as life carried on despite the war. The organizers aptly named the event the "World's Longest Marathon" —symbolizing that no race has lasted as long as Ukraine's fight for freedom. The event saw the participation of around 13,000 people from across the globe, with remote participants able to run any distance they wanted and encouraged to share their experiences on social media.
Nova Post, Ukraine's most prominent private delivery company, hosted the race with the dual purpose of honoring the defenders and raising funds to bolster Ukraine's air defense system. The project description stated their intention to thank and support defenders, doctors, rescuers, sappers, and volunteers—all the strong and resilient marathoners who selflessly work tirelessly for the sake of everyone.
Personal Tributes and Sacrifices
Inna Popereshniuk, co-founder of Nova Post, dedicated her race to six colleagues who were killed and 17 injured in a Russian attack on the Nova Post depot in the Kharkiv region on October 21. Participants like Volodymyr Rutkovskyi, a 31-year-old veteran, completed the course walking despite sustaining a severe injury during Ukraine's counteroffensive in the Zaporizhzhia region. With a prosthetic limb, he participated to pay tribute to two fallen comrades.
Tetiana Boiko, a 24-year-old from the western Ternopil region, traveled to Kyiv to take part in the race. Her bib bore the name of Volodymyr Semanyshyn, a young man from her hometown who was injured while attaching an explosive device to a drone. Determined to draw attention to his case, Boiko saw the race as an opportunity to raise funds for his expensive rehabilitation.
A Show of Unity and Resilience
The crowd cheered the runners, and many in the audience wept while waiting for participants at the finish line. The event served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals in the face of adversity and the unwavering spirit of the Ukrainian people. As the runners crossed the finish line, their emotions were palpable—a mixture of pride, gratitude, and determination.
The Kyiv marathon stands as a testament to the resilience and unity of the Ukrainian people. It is a poignant reminder that even in the midst of war, life goes on, and the human spirit endures. The funds raised from the event will contribute to strengthening Ukraine's defenses, providing much-needed support to those who have suffered, and keeping the memory of fallen heroes alive.
