Kuwait Airways Suspends Flights Amid Rising Middle East Tensions; Regional Airlines on Alert
In a major escalation of regional tensions, Iran launched short- and medium-range ballistic missiles at the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, a key US military installation, according to a US defense official on Monday.
"At this time, there are no reports of US casualties," the official confirmed. "We are monitoring this situation closely and will provide more information as it becomes available."

US Took Precautionary Steps Ahead of Strike
A satellite image dated June 19 shows nearly empty tarmacs at Al Udeid, suggesting that non-sheltered American aircraft were moved out in advance. This proactive step appears to be part of a broader US strategy to safeguard military assets amid rising conflict in the region, particularly following Iran's vow to retaliate against recent US airstrikes on its nuclear facilities.
Two US defense officials previously told CNN that the aircraft were relocated to other undisclosed locations in the Middle East to protect critical equipment and personnel. Similarly, US Navy ships stationed at Naval Support Activity Bahrain had also left port last week. Their current whereabouts remain unknown.
Regional Airspace Closures and Airline Disruptions
As the threat of further conflict looms, Qatar and Bahrain have closed their airspace, prompting a growing list of airline disruptions. Kuwait Airways announced the suspension of flights, citing "regional developments," via its official X (formerly Twitter) account.
The ongoing Iran-Israel-US tensions have triggered a wave of precautionary measures across Gulf nations, with increased military alertness and diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation.
Strategic Importance of Al Udeid Air Base
Located west of Doha, Al Udeid is the largest US military base in the Middle East, housing between 8,000 to 10,000 American personnel. It plays a critical role in US operations across the region, making it a high-priority target during periods of intensified conflict.
Outlook
While the absence of casualties has prevented immediate escalation, the missile strike marks a significant moment in the ongoing Iran-US standoff. With military repositioning underway and airspace closures affecting commercial travel, the Gulf region remains on high alert.
