Khalistani Separatism and Diplomatic Strains: India, US, Canada at Crossroads

The killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Khalistani terrorist, sparked a major diplomatic stir, particularly between India, the US, and Canada.

This incident has brought to the forefront the long-standing issues of Khalistani separatism, international diplomacy, and national security concerns, raising questions about whether the US and Canada are increasing pressure on India over such sensitive matters.

It's been a year since Hardeep Nijjar was shot and killed in his pickup truck by two masked gunmen in the parking lot of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia. Since the killing, there has been a long list of diplomatic and legal implications for the Indian government for the alleged assassination of the Sikh separatist leader.

India's foreign minister, S. Jaishankar, has stated that Canada's investigation into alleged Indian involvement in the assassination of a Sikh separatist in Vancouver last year was driven by "political compulsion." This comment follows the arrest of three Indian citizens in connection with the killing.

India, on its part, has maintained a steadfast position against Khalistani separatism. The Indian government has reiterated its stance that individuals like Nijjar, involved in financing and promoting separatist activities, are threats to its national security.

India has also constantly asked both the US and Canadian governments not to provide sanctuary or encourage Khalsitani separatists or movements, as they are deemed terrorist groups by the Indian government and that it has enhanced the importance of battling terror on a global scale.

The US, while not as directly embroiled in the Khalistani issue as Canada, has also shown concern for human rights and political freedoms, and the US government highlighted the need for a transparent and thorough investigation into Nijjar's death, underscoring their commitment to upholding democratic values and protecting the rights of individuals to express their political beliefs.

India, on its part, has maintained a steadfast position against Khalistani separatism. The Indian government has reiterated its stance that individuals like Nijjar, involved in financing and promoting separatist activities, are significant threats to national security.

Nijjar's killing sent diplomatic relations between Ottawa and New Delhi into a tailspin last year after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there were credible allegations linking Indian intelligence to the crime. On the other hand, India rejected the allegations as "absurd," temporarily halting the processing of visas and forcing Canada to reduce its diplomatic presence in the country significantly.

As the diplomatic landscape evolves, the impact of these tensions on broader US-India and Canada-India relations remains to be seen. Both the US and Canada have substantial economic and strategic ties with India, and any prolonged discord over issues like the Khalistani movement could have far-reaching implications.

Nevertheless, India is expected to continue pressing both nations to adopt a more stringent stance against Khalistani separatists, reflecting its priority on national security and territorial integrity.
