Kawasaki Bug: New Norovirus Strain Causes Rising Cases In Britain

A new norovirus strain, dubbed the 'Kawasaki bug', is spreading swiftly in Britain. Cases of vomiting and diarrhoea have doubled compared to last year. Experts consider this virus a new challenge following the coronavirus pandemic. British doctors are urging caution among the public.

Dr. John Burke, Chief Medical Officer at AXA Health, has reported on this emerging norovirus. He highlighted preventive measures against it. Norovirus is highly contagious and spreads through contact, causing symptoms like vomiting and diarrhoea in those infected.

Symptoms and Prevention

The Kawasaki bug manifests six primary symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, high fever, headache, and stomach cramps. Dr. Burke advises that these symptoms can often be managed at home. Vomiting and diarrhoea can lead to dehydration, increasing its risk.

To combat dehydration during this period, Dr. Burke recommends consuming plenty of fluids and electrolytes. He also suggests eating easily digestible foods while suffering from norovirus to aid recovery.

Recovery Recommendations

Rest is crucial for full recovery from the virus. Dr. Burke advises staying home for at least 48 hours and only venturing out once fully healthy. British doctors have also urged people to avoid crowded places to prevent further spread of the virus.

Known as the 'Winter Vomiting Bug' during colder months, norovirus requires careful attention to hygiene practices to limit its transmission. The public is encouraged to maintain cleanliness and avoid direct contact with infected individuals.

Expert Advice

"Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that spreads through contact," said Dr. Burke. "It can cause symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea in an infected person." His emphasis on prevention highlights the importance of awareness and proactive measures.

The rapid increase in cases has prompted health professionals to stress vigilance among communities. With proper care and precautions, individuals can manage symptoms effectively at home without needing medical intervention.
