Kamala Harris' Coconut Tree Meme Goes Viral Again: What’s Behind The Buzz?

The words, "You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?" spoken by Vice President Kamala Harris over a year ago at a White House event, are being circulated online as memes since President Biden's endorsement of Harris as the Democratic nominee on July 21.

The viral nature of the quote can be traced back to Harris's remarks made during the swearing-in ceremony of commissioners for the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics in May 2023, as per media reports.

In her speech, Harris emphasized the importance of considering not just the younger generation but also the needs of their parents, grandparents, teachers, and communities. She shared wisdom from her late mother, Shyamala Gopalan, who used to say, "I don't know what's wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?"

The quote became a meme and resurfaced after Biden's announcement on July 21 that he would not seek re-election, endorsing Harris as his successor. Online, references to coconut trees have been shared by Harris supporters and some Democratic politicians, including Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, who posted a picture of a man climbing a coconut tree with the message, "Madam Vice President, we are ready to help."

On July 21, Colorado Governor Jared Polis appeared to reference the viral coconut tree meme on X, using both the coconut and palm tree emojis along with an American flag icon in his post.

Anderson Clayton, Chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party, also participated in the trend, posting, "we all fell out of the coconut tree today into a gym full of democrats!!!!" on X, accompanied by photos from an event with Harris.

The coconut tree meme has sparked a wave of creative content on social media. Users have been remixing the moment from Harris's 2023 speech with music, including viral TikTok dances set to Charli XCX's song "Apple."

Additionally, parodies of the meme have appeared on X, incorporating various pop culture references. One user blended the meme into a "Sex and the City" parody and connected it to Charli XCX's "Brat Summer," a theme that the Harris campaign appears to be echoing with its lime green X profile banner.

"and so, the brat girl summer turned back into a joever fall. and i couldn't help but wonder...did we all just fall out of a coconut tree?" wrote one of the X Users.

Another X user shared a still from the "Barbie" movie showing a pink White House with tropical trees in front.

"are those... coconut trees?" the X user wrote.

Another person paid tribute to Harris' "coconut tree" quote through a hypothetical conversation between "Lord of the Ring" characters Frodo and Gandalf.

A user shared a photo on X of Meryl Streep's "The Devil Wears Prada" character Miranda Priestly, tweaking an iconic line from the film and swapping in coconut tree language.

One X post humorously captioned, "Did you fall out of the coconut tree and smack your little head on the context of all in which you live and what came before you?"

Another reimagined Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous quote about the "arc of the moral universe," stating, "the arc of the coconut tree is long, but it bends towards justice."

In Washington, D.C., several bars embraced the viral trend by creating coconut tree-themed drinks, as reported by The New York Times. For instance, Bunker, a bar and nightclub, offered $5 "Piña Kamala" coconut shots throughout the night on July 21, as reported by Today news. Additionally, some social media users have dubbed Harris' campaign "Operation Coconut Tree."

The Harris campaign also joined in on the fun. The official X page for Kamala Harris' presidential campaign, Kamala HQ, subtly referenced the "coconut tree" quote in its two-word bio: "Providing context."
