Nationwide July Fourth Violence Leaves 33 Dead; Chicago in Mourning

During the extended Fourth of July weekend, at least 33 people were killed and dozens more injured in shootings across the United States, authorities reported. The holiday is historically one of the deadliest days of the year in the country.

July Fourth Violence: 33 Dead

In Chicago, 11 people were killed and 55 wounded in shootings by Friday morning, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Among the incidents was a mass shooting on Thursday that claimed the lives of two women and an 8-year-old boy.

Chicago's Response to Violence

Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed deep sorrow over the recent violence, stating, "We are devastated by the recent violence that has left our city in a state of grief and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and communities impacted by these recent events." A community rally was planned for Friday evening, and police presence was increased over the weekend.

In another incident, eight people were wounded in Chicago's Little Italy neighbourhood shortly after midnight on Friday. About 90 minutes later, six individuals were injured in a shooting in the Austin neighbourhood. Preliminary findings suggest these shootings involved an exchange of gunfire between two people who then fled.

Violence Across Other States

In Huntington Beach, California, two people were killed and three others injured in an attack less than two hours after a fireworks show ended. Authorities arrested a suspect following reports of an assault with a deadly weapon on Thursday night.

A 15-year-old boy was taken into custody in Niles, Ohio, after a 23-year-old man was fatally shot at a Fourth of July party. In Cleveland, a 10-year-old girl named Gracie Griffin was fatally shot in a neighbourhood; it remains unclear what led to the shooting or if she was targeted.

A drive-by shooting in Philadelphia on Thursday night resulted in the death of a 19-year-old man and injuries to six others. The wounded included four juveniles who were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The motive behind the shooting is still unknown.

Incidents in Boston and Connecticut

Three shootings occurred in the Boston area following Fourth of July celebrations, leaving one man dead. The fatal shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. Friday near Boston's South End neighbourhood. Around the same time, three others were wounded in Jamaica Plain. Another shooting at a gas station later left one person with life-threatening injuries.

In Connecticut, Shamyria Williams, 23, was found shot in her car early Friday and pronounced dead at a hospital. Relatives believe she had just left a Fourth of July party.

Shootings in Albany and Tampa

Six males aged 16 to 19 were treated for non-life-threatening injuries after a shooting at a large gathering in Albany, New York. Police responded to reports of gunfire around 12:15 a.m. Friday but did not find any victims at the scene initially.

Four people were wounded early Friday outside a Tampa adult nightclub following an altercation between the club's security guard and two men. The suspects drove their car to the front of the Pink Pussycat Lounge and one shot the security guard with a handgun. The security guard underwent surgery and was stable; three other men suffered minor injuries.

Additional Incidents Nationwide

An 8-year-old boy was fatally stabbed during a domestic dispute in Queens, New York. Police later shot dead a 20-year-old man who held a knife to his father's throat and refused commands to drop it.

In High Point, North Carolina, Keith S. Lynch, 32, died after being shot during an unofficial fireworks display gathering. Shootings at two St. Louis-area Fourth of July gatherings left two men dead and five others injured.

Charles Speer, 42, died early Friday after being shot multiple times following an altercation at another man's home in West Virginia. In Taneytown, Maryland, a road-rage incident led to the fatal shooting of a 36-year-old man.

Earlier on Thursday, other shootings included an officer serving a warrant in Cleveland and an armed individual making threats in Yellowstone National Park.
