Nationwide July Fourth Violence Claims 26 Lives; Chicago in Mourning

Shootings and other violent incidents during the extended Fourth of July weekend have resulted in at least 26 deaths, including 11 in Chicago, and numerous injuries across the United States, according to authorities. Historically, the Fourth of July is one of the deadliest days of the year in the nation.

July Fourth Violence: 26 Dead

In Chicago alone, 11 people were killed and 55 wounded in shootings by Friday morning during the extended holiday weekend, reported the Chicago Sun-Times. A mass shooting on Thursday claimed the lives of two women and an 8-year-old boy. "We are devastated by the recent violence that has left our city in a state of grief," said Mayor Brandon Johnson.

Chicago's Response to Violence

A community rally was planned for Friday evening, and police presence will be increased over the weekend, Johnson stated. Eight people were injured in Chicago's Little Italy neighbourhood shortly after midnight on Friday. About 90 minutes later, a shooting in the Austin neighbourhood wounded six. Preliminary findings suggest these shootings involved gunfire exchanges between two individuals who then fled.

Due to recent violence at a popular Lake Michigan beach in Chicago, officials decided to close it early each night through the holiday weekend as a precaution. The 31st Street Beach has recently been the site of stabbings and shootings.
