WikiLeaks' Julian Assange Ends Legal Saga with Guilty Plea in US
Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, will plead guilty to a felony for publishing US military secrets. This plea deal will allow him to return to Australia after years of confinement and legal battles. The hearing is set for Wednesday in the Northern Mariana Islands, a US commonwealth in the Pacific.

A private jet carrying Assange is expected to land in Saipan, the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands, ahead of the hearing. Assange will plead guilty to an Espionage Act charge of conspiring to unlawfully obtain and disseminate classified national defence information. The US Justice Department agreed to hold the hearing on this remote island because Assange opposed coming to the continental US and it is closer to Australia.
Legal Odyssey Nears End
The deal, revealed Monday night in court papers, marks the end of a decade-long legal saga involving Assange. His secret-sharing website made him a hero among press freedom advocates but also drew criticism for endangering national security. US prosecutors have argued that his actions recklessly put the country's security at risk.
Although Assange will admit guilt to a single felony count, he will avoid serving time in an American prison. He will receive credit for the five years spent in a high-security British prison while fighting extradition to the US. Before his imprisonment in London, Assange spent years hiding in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden over rape allegations, which he has denied.
Mixed Reactions
The resolution allows both sides to claim some success. The Justice Department resolves a complex case without trial, while Assange avoids further imprisonment. Last month, Assange won the right to appeal an extradition order after his lawyers argued that US assurances on free speech protections were inadequate.
Assange's wife, Stella Assange, expressed her relief from Australia. "He will be a free man once it is signed off by a judge," she said, adding that she still found it hard to believe. Stella married Assange in prison in 2022 and stated that details of the agreement would be public once approved by the judge.
Assange left his London prison on Monday after being granted bail during a secret hearing last week. He boarded a plane that stopped in Bangkok for refuelling before heading towards Saipan. A video posted by WikiLeaks on X showed Assange looking out at the sky as the plane flew towards the island.
Political and Public Reactions
The guilty plea resolves a criminal case initiated during Republican President Donald Trump's administration over publishing war logs and diplomatic cables detailing US military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Prosecutors alleged that Assange conspired with former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to obtain and publish these records without regard for American national security.
Former Vice President Mike Pence criticised the new arrangement as a "miscarriage of justice," stating on X that Assange endangered troops' lives during wartime and should have faced full prosecution. However, press freedom advocates praised Assange for exposing military conduct that might otherwise have remained hidden.
Among WikiLeaks' publications was a video showing a 2007 Apache helicopter attack by American forces in Baghdad that killed 11 people, including two Reuters journalists. For years, Australia has urged the US government to drop the case against Assange, highlighting discrepancies between his treatment and Manning's. Former President Barack Obama commuted Manning's 35-year sentence to seven years, leading to her release in 2017.
"Regardless of people's views on Mr. Assange's activities, this case has dragged on too long," said Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. "There's nothing to be gained by his continued incarceration, and we want him brought home to Australia."
Assange sought refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London in 2012 and was granted political asylum after English courts ruled he should be extradited to Sweden for a rape investigation. British police arrested him after Ecuador withdrew his asylum status in 2019, leading to his imprisonment for skipping bail when he first took shelter inside the embassy.
Although Sweden eventually dropped its sex crimes investigation due to elapsed time, Assange remained in London's high-security Belmarsh Prison during his extradition fight with the US.
Assange made headlines again in 2016 when WikiLeaks published Democratic emails allegedly stolen by Russian intelligence operatives. Although not charged in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, the inquiry highlighted how hacking operations interfered with that year's election on behalf of Trump.
This plea deal brings an end to one of the most high-profile legal battles involving press freedom and national security concerns.
