Jaishankar Takes Tough Stance On Border Issues in Recent Talks with Chinese Officials

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stressed the importance of respecting the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and past agreements to stabilise ties with China. He met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for the second time in a month. The meeting took place in Vientiane, Laos, during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meetings.

The two ministers discussed the need for strong guidance to complete the disengagement process following the military standoff in eastern Ladakh that began in May 2020. Jaishankar stated on X, "Met with Communist Party of China Politburo member and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Vientiane today. Continued our ongoing discussions about our bilateral relationship. The state of the border will necessarily be reflected on the state of our ties."

Focus on Border Peace

India has maintained that normal ties with China are impossible without peace at the border. The Jaishankar-Wang talks occurred amid a prolonged border dispute in eastern Ladakh, now in its fifth year. Both sides agreed on the urgency to complete disengagement and ensure full respect for the LAC and past agreements.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that the meeting allowed both ministers to review the situation since their last meeting in Astana on July 4. Their discussions aimed at resolving remaining issues along the LAC to rebuild bilateral relations. "Both Ministers agreed on the need to work with purpose and urgency to achieve complete disengagement at the earliest," said the MEA.

Mutual Respect and Sensitivity

Jaishankar emphasised three key principles: mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity. These principles are crucial for India-China relations. Both sides agreed to hold an early meeting of the Working Mechanism on Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) to advance discussions.

The Chinese foreign ministry highlighted Wang's emphasis on strengthening dialogue and communication between China and India. Wang stated that both countries should enhance understanding, handle differences properly, and develop mutually beneficial cooperation.

Global Impact

Wang noted that China-India relations have significant global implications. He expressed hope that both sides would meet halfway, explore ways to coexist positively, and guide sectors towards a better understanding of each other. "It is in the interests of both sides for China-India relations to return to the right track," Wang said.

The Indian and Chinese militaries have been in a standoff since May 2020, with no full resolution yet achieved despite disengagement from several friction points. The fierce clash in Galwan Valley in June 2020 significantly worsened ties between the two countries.

Military Talks

The two sides have held 21 rounds of Corps Commander-level talks to resolve the standoff. India has urged China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) to disengage from Depsang and Demchok areas. The last high-level military talks occurred in February without a breakthrough but agreed to maintain peace and continue communication.

Both ministers exchanged views on global and regional situations during their meeting. They agreed to work together to maintain peace at the border and promote progress in border affairs consultations.

Jaishankar reaffirmed India's stance that relations must be based on mutual respect, interest, and sensitivity during their meeting in Astana. This consistent view underscores India's approach towards resolving issues with China.

The ongoing discussions between Jaishankar and Wang reflect efforts by both nations to stabilise their relationship amid complex international challenges. Both sides aim for sustainable development in their bilateral ties while addressing immediate border issues with urgency.
