Israeli Airstrikes Claim Lives of 42 Individuals in Gaza as Ceasefire Negotiations Resume in Qatar

Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of at least 42 individuals, including children, according to hospital and emergency workers. The strikes occurred overnight and into Friday. Health workers and Israel's military exchanged claims regarding evacuation orders for two hospitals in northern Gaza. These developments coincide with stalled ceasefire discussions set to resume in Qatar, aiming to end nearly 15 months of conflict.

Israeli Strikes Kill 42 in Gaza Amid Talks

In central Gaza, staff at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital reported that more than a dozen women and children were killed in areas like Nuseirat, Zawaida, Maghazi, and Deir al-Balah. The previous day saw numerous fatalities across the enclave. Abdul Rahman Al-Nabrisi from the Maghazi refugee camp said, "We woke up to the missile strike. We found the whole house disintegrated."

Impact on Hospitals

The situation in northern Gaza hospitals has raised concerns. Al-Awda Hospital stated that Israel's military instructed staff and patients to evacuate immediately, though details were scarce. A nurse at the Indonesian Hospital mentioned receiving similar orders but remained with 19 people, including eight patients. They requested ambulances for evacuation.

Israel's military denied operating to evacuate Al-Awda or Indonesian hospitals. It reiterated to health officials that there was no need for evacuation at the Indonesian facility. Verification of these claims is challenging due to restricted movement in Gaza and barred access for foreign journalists.

Military Actions and Responses

The Israeli army reported striking multiple Hamas gathering points and command centres throughout Gaza. It warned residents of central Gaza about impending attacks following launches toward Israel. Some projectiles entered from central and northern Gaza, but no injuries were reported.

Later on Friday, an airstrike killed three people in a car in Zawaida, as per Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital officials. Civil Defence reported another strike killing seven people, including four children and a woman, in Shijaiyah near Gaza City. Two more individuals died at Al-Samer junction in Gaza City.

Journalists and Ceasefire Talks

Freelance journalist Omar al-Derawi was among those killed on Friday. His shroud was marked with a press vest. The Committee to Protect Journalists noted over 130 Palestinian reporters have died during the conflict.

Ceasefire negotiations are expected to resume on Friday in Qatar. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu authorised a delegation from Mossad, Shin Bet, and the military for talks. Despite repeated stalls, Netanyahu remains committed to dismantling Hamas.

Conflict Background

The conflict began with a Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in around 1,200 deaths and 250 abductions. Approximately 100 hostages remain in Gaza, with a third presumed dead.

Israel's retaliatory offensive has claimed over 45,500 Palestinian lives in Gaza, according to the Health Ministry. Women and children constitute more than half of these casualties. The ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants.

Israel maintains it targets only militants and holds Hamas accountable for civilian casualties due to their operations in densely populated areas. The military claims to have killed 17,000 militants but has not provided evidence.

The war has devastated Gaza's infrastructure and displaced about 90% of its 2.3 million residents multiple times. With winter setting in, hundreds of thousands are now living in tents near the sea.
