Israeli Strikes Hit Damascus, Triggering Regional Tensions

Israeli airstrikes in Damascus and Lebanon have resulted in casualties and heightened tensions in the region. The strikes in Syrias capital killed two people, while an airstrike in Lebanon led to a rocket attack by Hezbollah. The escalating conflict raises concerns about further instability in the Middle East.

In a recent escalation of tensions, Israeli strikes hit a neighborhood in the Syrian capital of Damascus on Wednesday morning, resulting in the loss of two lives and causing significant material damage. The strikes were reported by Syria's state TV, but there has been no official confirmation from Israel.

Casualties and Damage in Damascus

Syrian state TV reported that several missiles struck the western neighborhood of Kfar Sousseh, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The identities of the deceased have not been disclosed. The pro-government Sham FM radio station reported that the strike targeted a building near an Iranian school. According to an unnamed military official quoted by the state news agency SANA, the missiles were fired from the direction of Syria's Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and hit a building, killing two civilians and injuring another.

Similar to Previous Strike in Beirut

Rami Abdurrahman, the head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based opposition war monitor, noted that the strike in Damascus bore similarities to the killing of Saleh Arouri, a top official of the militant Palestinian Hamas group, in Beirut last month. The strike damaged the fourth floor of a 10-story building, shattered windows in nearby structures, and caused damage to numerous parked vehicles in the area.

History of Israeli Strikes in Syria

In recent years, Israel has carried out numerous strikes on targets within government-controlled areas of war-torn Syria. While Israel rarely acknowledges its actions in Syria, it has previously stated that it targets bases of Iran-allied militant groups, such as Lebanon's Hezbollah, which has provided support to Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces.

Israeli Strikes on Iranian Targets

Last month, an Israeli strike in the western neighborhood of Mazzeh in the Syrian capital destroyed a building used by the Iranian paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, resulting in the deaths of at least five Iranians. In December, another Israeli airstrike in a suburb of Damascus killed Iranian general Seyed Razi Mousavi, a longtime adviser to the Iranian paramilitary Revolutionary Guard in Syria.

Hezbollah's Response

In response to the Israeli strikes, Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group, launched rocket attacks on the northern Israeli village of Matsuva. This retaliation came after a series of overnight strikes by Israel, including one on Safi Mountain in the Hezbollah stronghold of Apple Province and another near the southern town of Khiam.

Lebanese Casualties and Diplomatic Efforts

In Lebanon, an Israeli airstrike on the southern village of Majdal Zoun resulted in the deaths of a woman and her daughter. The woman was identified as Khadija Salman, 40, while her 7-year-old daughter, Amal al-Dur, succumbed to her injuries later. In response to the escalating violence, Lebanon's Foreign Minister Abdallah Bouhabib met with US Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Coons in Beirut, urging Israel to prioritize peace over war.

The recent Israeli strikes in Syria and Lebanon have heightened tensions in the region, leading to retaliatory attacks and diplomatic efforts to defuse the situation. The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, including civilians, and has raised concerns about regional stability.
