Israeli-American Teenager Survives Hamas Attack
In a tragic incident over the weekend, an Israeli-American teenager managed to survive a violent siege on his home by Hamas attackers. The attack resulted in the death of both his parents who were killed while trying to protect him.

Living on a kibbutz near the border with Gaza in southern Israel, the family had less than a minute to seek safety after being alerted about the imminent attack. As fighters invaded their home, they scrambled into a tiny room designed for protection against rocket attacks. Shlomi Mathias, father of 16-year-old Rotem Mathias, lost his arm attempting to keep the intruders out of this safe room; he was subsequently shot dead.
The Survival
As bullets rained down on them, Debbie Mathias instructed her son Rotem to get down and shielded him from gunfire until she herself was fatally shot. Despite being hit in the stomach by a bullet that passed through his mother's body, Rotem managed to stay hidden under his deceased mother for half an hour before seeking shelter under a bed and then hiding under blankets in an adjacent laundry room.
The Rescue
Risking detection by laughing fighters twice during this ordeal, young Rotem eventually found rescue at the hands of Israeli soldiers. Recounting these harrowing events from hospital where he received treatment for gunshot and shrapnel wounds before being released Tuesday, Rotem expressed how he minimized breathing and movement while praying fervently not be discovered by attackers.
The Aftermath
This horrific ordeal started unfolding early Saturday morning via group chat when Shlomi and Debbie messaged relatives about hearing Arabic voices followed by sounds of glass breaking and gunfire; following which there was silence until their son confirmed their deaths asking for help.
For the next 10 hours, relatives including Debbie's brother-in-law Eran Shani and his family supported Rotem via chat. They even managed to get a doctor on the call to assess his condition while Shani's psychotherapist wife tried calming him down.
Meanwhile, the Mathias' two daughters Shir (21) and Shakked (19) were hiding separately in their own safe rooms within minutes of their parents' home. After managing to avoid detection by Hamas fighters who knocked on their door, they connected with a soldier who came for them.
The Family
The attack occurred just hours after the family had spent a joyful evening together reminiscing about how their parents met; both musicians themselves - father Shlomi was a music teacher and mother Debbie was a singer-songwriter. The family had plans to attend Bruno Mars concert in Tel Aviv that Saturday which makes this tragedy all more poignant as it comes mere hours after such familial warmth.
In conclusion, this tragic incident underscores the danger faced by civilians living near conflict zones like Gaza border where violence can erupt suddenly shattering lives forever. It is also an example of extraordinary courage exhibited by young Rotem Mathias whose survival instincts helped him escape death despite losing both his parents in front of his eyes.
