Israeli Airstrike Targets Beirut, Killing One in Escalation with Hezbollah

Israel conducted a rare airstrike on Beirut, killing at least one person and escalating tensions with Hezbollah. The Israeli military stated the strike targeted a militant commander linked to the deaths of 12 children and teens in a recent rocket attack on the Golan Heights, as well as other Israeli civilians.

Airstrike in Beirut Kills One

The Lebanese state-run National News Agency reported that the drone strike launched three rockets, resulting in one woman's death and several injuries. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals, with Bahman Hospital calling for blood donations. It remains unclear if the intended target was among the casualties.

Hezbollah's Response

A Hezbollah official and the group's TV station confirmed that an Israeli airstrike hit Hezbollah's stronghold in Haret Hreik, a southern suburb of Beirut. The strike caused significant damage to several buildings, although it was not immediately clear if any Hezbollah officials were harmed.

The airstrike damaged an apartment building next to a hospital, collapsing half of the structure. The hospital sustained minor damages, and debris and broken glass littered the surrounding streets. Paramedics were seen evacuating injured individuals from the damaged buildings.

Eyewitness Accounts

A resident living about 200 metres from the explosion site described how dust from the blast "covered everything," breaking glass in his son's apartment. "Then people went down on the streets," he said. "Everyone has family. They went to check on them. It was a lot of destruction." He spoke anonymously due to security concerns during this tense period.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant commented on X shortly after the strike, stating, "Hezbollah crossed a red line." This statement underscores the heightened tensions between Israel and Hezbollah following recent events.

Historical Context

The last time Israel targeted Beirut was in January when an airstrike killed top Hamas official Saleh Arouri. That strike marked Israel's first attack on Beirut since the 34-day war with Hezbollah in 2006.

Following Tuesday's strike, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office did not immediately release a statement but shared a photo of Netanyahu with his national security advisor and other officials minutes after the incident.

The recent escalation began with a rocket attack on Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights, which Israel attributed to Hezbollah. However, Hezbollah has denied any involvement in that attack.

The situation remains fluid as both sides assess their next moves amidst rising tensions. The international community watches closely as these developments unfold, hoping for de-escalation and stability in the region.
