Israel's Withdrawal from Lebanon May Extend Beyond Ceasefire Deadline, Netanyahu Indicates

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that Israel might not meet the deadline for withdrawing all its forces from Lebanon, as outlined in a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah. The deadline, set for Sunday, was part of a deal reached in November. This agreement required Hezbollah militants to retreat north of the Litani River, while Lebanese forces and UN peacekeepers would patrol southern Lebanon.

Netanyahu Hints at Delay in Israels Withdrawal

Netanyahu's statement suggested that the withdrawal could extend beyond the 60-day timeline due to incomplete enforcement by the Lebanese government. This likely refers to the deployment of Lebanese troops. Israeli officials have engaged in discussions with the United States, which, along with France, helped broker the agreement.

US Support for Ceasefire Extension

The Trump administration appears ready to advocate for a brief extension of the ceasefire in Lebanon. National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes stated that "a short, temporary ceasefire extension is urgently needed." He emphasised President Trump's commitment to ensuring the safety of Israeli citizens returning to northern Israel and supporting Lebanon's new government under President Michel Aoun.

Hughes further mentioned that all parties aim to prevent Hezbollah from threatening Lebanon or its neighbours. He also noted that the US is "pleased that the IDF has started the withdrawal from the central regions." However, there was no immediate response from Lebanon or Hezbollah regarding Netanyahu's statement.

Hezbollah's Warning and Conflict Background

The Lebanese government has stated it cannot deploy its forces until Israeli troops have withdrawn. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has warned it may resume fighting if Israel does not comply with the ceasefire terms. The conflict began when Hezbollah launched rockets and drones into northern Israel following a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

Both Hezbollah and Hamas are allies of Iran, with Hezbollah claiming solidarity with Palestinians. In response, Israel conducted airstrikes, leading to over a year of exchanges between the two sides. The conflict intensified in September when Israel launched significant airstrikes across Lebanon, killing Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah and most of his deputies.

Impact of Escalating Violence

The escalation saw Israeli ground forces invade Lebanon days later. Israeli air and ground attacks resulted in over 4,000 deaths in Lebanon, including many civilians. At its peak, more than 1 million Lebanese were displaced. Hezbollah's rocket attacks forced approximately 60,000 Israelis from their homes in northern Israel and killed 76 people in Israel, including 31 soldiers.

During operations inside Lebanon, nearly 50 Israeli soldiers lost their lives. The ongoing violence underscores the fragile nature of peace efforts in the region and highlights the complex dynamics between involved parties.
