Israel to Return Seized AP Video Equipment After International Backlash
In a significant development, the Israeli government has decided to return the camera and broadcasting equipment it had seized from The Associated Press (AP) on Tuesday. This move comes after considerable pressure from various quarters, including the Biden administration, journalism organizations, and an Israeli opposition leader. The equipment was initially confiscated in southern Israel, with authorities citing a violation of a new media law that led to the provision of images to Al Jazeera.

Israel had recently enacted legislation on May 5, targeting Qatar-based Al Jazeera by shutting down its operations within the country. This included confiscating its equipment, banning broadcasts, and blocking websites. The seizure of AP's equipment followed similar lines, with Israeli officials pointing out the live video feed of Gaza appearing in real-time on Al Jazeera as a primary concern.
Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi announced late Tuesday on the social platform X that he had ordered the cancellation of the action and the return of the equipment to AP. Furthermore, he mentioned that the defense ministry would review news outlets' positioning of live video feeds of Gaza, highlighting an issue that had not been previously communicated to AP.
Lauren Easton, vice president of corporate communications at AP, expressed relief over the development but voiced concerns about the Israeli government's application of the foreign broadcaster law and its implications for independent journalism in Israel.
The incident unfolded when officials from the Communications Ministry arrived at AP's location in Sderot on Tuesday afternoon, seizing the equipment under allegations of violating the country's foreign broadcaster law. This action came shortly after AP broadcasted a general view of northern Gaza, adhering to Israel's military censorship rules which prohibit broadcasts that could potentially endanger soldiers.
Israel's opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized the government's move as "an act of madness," prompting a response from Karhi who cited the unanimous government approval of the law as justification for seizing devices used to deliver Al Jazeera content.
The closure of Al Jazeera's offices earlier this month had already sparked warnings from media groups about serious repercussions for press freedom in Israel. The law grants Karhi significant authority to enforce it against media outlets, raising concerns about Israel's press freedom record during ongoing conflicts.
The AP's live video from Sderot has been one of the few independent sources providing insights into the situation in Gaza. Israel has accused Al Jazeera of bias and labeled it a "terror channel." Despite these accusations, Al Jazeera remains one of the few international news outlets in Gaza, reporting on airstrikes and hospital conditions while accusing Israel of committing massacres.
This incident is not isolated in the context of Israel-Hamas conflicts. During the 2021 war between Israel and Hamas, an Israeli army attack destroyed AP's Gaza office building on claims of Hamas using it for military purposes—a claim AP denied and for which evidence was never publicly provided by the army.
The ongoing war in Gaza initiated by a Hamas attack in Israel has resulted in significant casualties. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, over 35,000 Palestinians have been killed since then—a figure that does not differentiate between civilians and combatants.
This recent development underscores ongoing tensions between media freedom and national security concerns within conflict zones, highlighting the challenges faced by journalists and news organizations operating under stringent conditions.
