Israel Strikes Beirut, Targets Commander Over Golan Youths' Deaths
Israel's military announced on Tuesday that it conducted an airstrike in Beirut, targeting a militant commander accused of orchestrating a rocket attack that killed 12 children and teens in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights over the weekend. The attack has been attributed to the Hezbollah militant group, although Hezbollah has denied involvement.

Israeli Defence Minister's Statement
Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant commented on the incident via the platform X, stating, "Hezbollah crossed a red line." This statement came shortly after the airstrike. The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not release an immediate statement but shared a photo of Netanyahu with his national security advisor and other officials minutes after the strike.
Details of the Airstrike
A Hezbollah official and the group's TV station reported that an Israeli airstrike hit Hezbollah's stronghold south of Beirut on Tuesday evening, causing damage. The strike targeted an apartment building next to a hospital in Haret Hreik, collapsing half of the building. The hospital sustained minor damages, and debris and broken glass littered the surrounding streets.
Lebanon's state-run National News Agency confirmed that the airstrike in southern Beirut was executed using a drone that launched three rockets. It remains unclear if any Hezbollah official was injured in the attack. The last time Israel targeted Beirut was in January when an airstrike killed top Hamas official Saleh Arouri.
Historical Context
The recent airstrike marks a significant event as it is only the second time Israel has targeted Beirut since the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah in the summer of 2006. The previous strike in January was notable for being the first since that conflict.
The situation remains tense as both sides continue to exchange accusations and denials regarding their involvement in recent attacks. The international community is closely monitoring developments to assess potential escalations in violence.
The aftermath of Tuesday's airstrike has left several buildings damaged, with local authorities assessing the extent of destruction and potential casualties. The incident underscores ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, highlighting the fragile security situation in the region.
The Israeli military's actions and statements from officials indicate a firm stance against perceived threats from Hezbollah. Meanwhile, Hezbollah's denial of involvement in the rocket attack adds complexity to the narrative, leaving room for further investigation and diplomatic efforts to address underlying issues.
As events unfold, both regional and global stakeholders are likely to engage in discussions aimed at preventing further escalation and promoting stability in the area.
