Israel Releases Harrowing Video of Gaza Tunnel Where Six Hostages Were Killed

The Israeli military has released video footage showing a Gaza tunnel where six hostages were recently killed by Hamas. The footage reveals a cramped, underground passageway with poor ventilation and no bathroom facilities. This discovery, made last month, has intensified public anger in Israel and increased pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to negotiate a cease-fire with Hamas to secure the release of remaining hostages.

Gaza Tunnel Hostage Crisis Video Out

Israeli military spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari stated that the footage had been shown to the hostages' families. "It was very hard for them to see how their loved ones survived in those conditions," he said. Evidence suggested that the six hostages had been protecting each other when they were killed, though Hagari did not elaborate on the specifics of this evidence.

Hostage Identities and Background

Among the six hostages was Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23, originally from Berkeley, California. His parents led a high-profile campaign for his release after he lost part of his left arm to a grenade during the October 7 attack that ignited the Gaza conflict. In April, Hamas released a video showing him alive, which sparked protests in Israel. The other hostages were identified as Ori Danino, 25; Eden Yerushalmi, 24; Almog Sarusi, 27; Alexander Lobanov, 33; and Carmel Gat, 40.

Three of these individuals, including Goldberg-Polin, were reportedly set to be released in the first phase of a cease-fire proposal discussed in July. Their deaths further fueled public outrage when their bodies were discovered.

Details of the Tunnel Discovery

The bodies were found by the military in Rafah, southern Gaza, on Saturday, August 31. Pathology tests indicated they had been killed on the night of August 29. The military discovered a tunnel shaft beneath a children's room and advanced cautiously due to potential booby traps. The bodies were located about 120 metres into the tunnel behind an iron door.

Hagari described the tunnel as low and narrow with humid conditions that made breathing difficult. Soldiers found evidence suggesting the hostages and "at least two terrorists" had been there for several days. Items found included mattresses, clothes, assault rifle magazines, shells, energy bars, tuna cans, bottles of urine, and an improvised toilet bucket dug into the ground.

Military Actions and Hostage Situation

On Friday near where the hostages were found, Israeli soldiers killed two militants attempting to flee from a tunnel complex. Hagari mentioned there was "a probability" these militants were responsible for killing the hostages. DNA tests are being conducted to confirm this.

Hamas kidnapped around 250 people during the October 7 attack. Over 100 were released during a brief cease-fire in November in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. Eight hostages have been rescued by Israeli forces, while three Israeli hostages who escaped captivity were mistakenly killed by Israeli troops in December. Currently, Israeli authorities report that 101 hostages remain in captivity, including 35 believed to be dead.

Hamas has proposed releasing the hostages in exchange for ending the war, withdrawing Israeli forces from Gaza, and freeing numerous Palestinian prisoners, including high-profile militants. However, cease-fire negotiations have yet to yield any agreement.

The release of this video footage underscores the dire conditions faced by hostages and highlights ongoing tensions between Israel and Hamas as efforts continue to secure their release.
