Israel Attempts to Assassinate Hamas Military Leader in Gaza

Israel attempted to assassinate Mohammed Deif, the elusive leader of Hamas' military wing, on Saturday. The strike occurred in a humanitarian zone in southern Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 90 Palestinians and injuring nearly 300 more, according to local health officials. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated it remains uncertain if Deif and another target, Rafa Salama, were killed. He also mentioned that Hamas' entire leadership is marked for death.

Profile of Mohammed Deif

Deif has been a key figure in Hamas since the 1990s, co-founding its military wing, the Qassam Brigades. He has led the unit for over two decades. Israel holds him and Yahya Sinwar responsible for the October 7 attack that killed around 1,200 people in southern Israel, sparking the current conflict. Despite surviving multiple assassination attempts, Deif is believed to be paralyzed and has not been seen publicly for years.

Born in Khan Younis' refugee camp in the early 1960s, Deif joined Hamas shortly after its formation in the late 1980s. During the first Palestinian intifada in 1989, he was arrested by Israel but later released. In 2002, he became head of the Qassam Brigades after his predecessor was killed by Israel. He is credited with expanding Hamas' tunnel network beneath Gaza and orchestrating attacks that killed many Israeli civilians.

Impact on War and Negotiations

The potential killing of Deif would be a significant victory for Israel and a major psychological blow to Hamas. Netanyahu emphasized that all Hamas leaders are "marked for death" and suggested that targeting them could push Hamas towards accepting a cease-fire deal. However, this action might also disrupt ongoing cease-fire talks and widen the gap between Hamas and Israeli delegations in Cairo.

Khaled el-Gindy from the Middle East Institute noted that while Israel might see this as a victory narrative they have been seeking for months, it could also harden Hamas' stance. "Accepting a cease-fire in that context would seem like a surrender," he said.

Deif's name means "the guest" in Arabic, reflecting his habit of frequently changing locations to evade capture. His physical condition remains a topic of speculation; some reports suggest he uses a wheelchair due to past injuries, while others claim he can walk unassisted.

In May, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court announced intentions to arrest Deif, Sinwar, and Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas' exiled supreme leader. The prosecutor also seeks the arrests of Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Netanyahu reiterated that Israel will not end the war until it achieves its goals of destroying Hamas' military capabilities. The assassination attempt on Deif underscores Israel's commitment to this objective but also complicates efforts towards a cease-fire agreement.

The situation remains tense as both sides navigate the complexities of war and potential negotiations. The outcome of these events will significantly influence the future trajectory of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
