Islamic State Claims Responsibility For Iran Twin Blasts, Killing Over 100

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the twin bombings in Iran's Kerman city, resulting in the deaths of approximately 103 individuals and injuring 140 more during a commemorative gathering marking the fourth anniversary of commander Qassem Soleimani's death.

Using Telegram channels affiliated with the group, the Islamic State posted a statement owning up to the attack. Soleimani, a revered Iranian general, was killed in a US drone strike in 2020.

The explosions occurred with a 15-minute interval during the assembly, employing a delayed blast tactic. This method seemingly aimed to target both initial responders and the general public, maximizing casualties.

Taking place close to the Saheb al-Zaman Mosque in Kerman, Soleimani's hometown and burial site, the blasts happened as supporters gathered to honor his fourth death anniversary, following his demise just outside Baghdad airport. State media reported over 170 wounded individuals due to the bombings.

Reports emerged on Thursday of gunfire in Kerman, following the incidents a day earlier. According to Iran's Tasnim news agency, "two bags carrying bombs went off" at the location, triggered by remote control.

Soleimani led the Quds Force, overseeing Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps' foreign operations, directing military actions across the Middle East.

Considered a "living martyr" by Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei while alive, Soleimani was widely acclaimed for his pivotal role in defeating the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
