IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel Announces Resignation Effective on Trump's Inauguration Day

Daniel Werfel, the IRS Commissioner, announced his decision to resign on January 20, 2025, coinciding with President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration. In a letter to IRS staff, Werfel explained that after much thought and discussion, he concluded that stepping down would best support a smooth transition. He expressed confidence in the IRS team to lead the organisation effectively until a new commissioner is appointed.

Werfel to Resign as IRS Commissioner

Werfel's term was initially set to conclude in November 2027. His early resignation is notable as IRS commissioners usually serve across different presidential administrations. Werfel began his term in March 2023 under President Joe Biden. Despite intending to complete his term, Werfel acknowledged Trump's decision to nominate a new commissioner influenced his choice to leave early.

Nomination of New IRS Commissioner

President-elect Trump has nominated Billy Long, a former Missouri congressman and auctioneer, as the next IRS Commissioner. This announcement came in December and prompted Werfel's decision to step down earlier than planned. Long served six terms in the House before being considered for this role.

Werfel shared that he was moved by those who hoped he would continue his work at the IRS. However, he emphasised the duty of civil servants to ensure a successful transition for the incoming commissioner. "While I had always intended to complete my full term as Commissioner," Werfel stated, "the President-elect has announced his plan to nominate a new IRS Commissioner."

Reactions to Long's Nomination

The nomination of Billy Long has sparked criticism from some Democrats. Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon described Long's selection as "a bizarre choice." The decision has raised eyebrows due to Long's background and lack of direct experience with tax administration.

Despite the unusual circumstances surrounding his departure, Werfel expressed gratitude for his time at the IRS. He praised the dedication and capability of the civil servant leaders and employees who will continue guiding the organisation during this transition period.

Werfel's early resignation highlights the challenges faced during transitions between administrations. As he prepares to leave, Werfel remains optimistic about the future of the IRS under new leadership.
