Iranian Hackers Aim at WhatsApp Accounts in Biden, Trump Teams, Says Meta
Meta Platforms revealed on Friday that an Iranian hacking group, previously linked to attacks on both Democratic and Republican presidential campaigns, attempted to breach WhatsApp accounts of staffers from President Joe Biden's and former President Donald Trump's administrations. The hackers posed as tech support agents from companies like Microsoft and Google.

Meta discovered the network after suspicious WhatsApp messages were reported by recipients. The company's investigators connected this activity to the same group responsible for a hacking incident involving Trump's campaign. The FBI confirmed that Iran's broader effort to interfere with the U.S. presidential election included a hack of Trump's campaign and an attempted breach of the Biden-Harris campaign.
Targeted Accounts and Meta's Response
The hackers aimed at WhatsApp accounts of individuals in the Middle East, the United States, and the United Kingdom, including political and diplomatic officials linked to both Trump and Biden administrations. Meta blocked a "small cluster" of these accounts. "We have not seen evidence of the targeted WhatsApp accounts being compromised, but out of an abundance of caution, we're sharing our findings publicly, in addition to sharing information with law enforcement and our industry peers," Meta stated.
U.S. intelligence officials attribute Iran's aggressive cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns to several motives. These include confusing and polarising voters to undermine confidence in U.S. democracy, eroding support for Israel, and opposing candidates likely to increase tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Iran's Broader Cyber Efforts
Iran has vowed revenge against Trump for ending a nuclear deal, reimposing sanctions, and ordering the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani. In July, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines reported that Iran covertly supported American protests against Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza. Groups linked to Iran posed as online activists, encouraged campus protests, and provided financial support to some protest groups.
Messages left with the Trump and Harris campaigns were not immediately returned on Friday. The FBI's statement highlighted Iran's ongoing efforts to interfere with U.S. elections through cyberattacks and disinformation.
Meta's proactive measures included blocking suspicious accounts and sharing their findings with law enforcement and industry peers. This action underscores the importance of vigilance in protecting digital platforms from state-sponsored cyber threats.
Iran's cyber activities aim to destabilise U.S. democracy by spreading confusion among voters and undermining electoral processes. These efforts also seek to weaken support for Israel while opposing candidates perceived as hostile towards Iran.
The hacking group's tactics involved impersonating tech support agents from well-known companies like Microsoft and Google, targeting WhatsApp accounts of political staffers across multiple countries. Meta's swift response helped mitigate potential damage from these cyberattacks.
The ongoing threat from Iranian hackers highlights the need for robust cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive information and maintain public trust in democratic institutions. As cyber threats evolve, collaboration between tech companies, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies remains crucial in countering such attacks effectively.
Meta's disclosure serves as a reminder of the persistent risks posed by state-sponsored cyber activities aimed at disrupting political processes globally. By sharing their findings publicly, Meta aims to raise awareness about these threats and encourage collective action to safeguard digital platforms.
The Iranian hacking group's attempts reflect broader geopolitical tensions influencing cyber warfare strategies. As nations continue to leverage cyber capabilities for political gain, ensuring robust defences against such threats becomes increasingly vital for maintaining global stability.
Meta's actions demonstrate a commitment to transparency and collaboration in addressing cybersecurity challenges posed by state-sponsored actors. This approach is essential for building resilience against future cyber threats targeting critical infrastructure and democratic institutions worldwide.
The situation underscores the importance of continuous monitoring and proactive measures in defending against sophisticated cyberattacks orchestrated by nation-states with vested interests in disrupting political systems.
By highlighting these incidents, Meta contributes to a broader understanding of the complexities involved in countering state-sponsored cyber threats effectively. This knowledge is crucial for developing comprehensive strategies to protect digital ecosystems from malicious activities driven by geopolitical motives.
The ongoing vigilance required to combat such threats emphasises the need for international cooperation in strengthening cybersecurity frameworks globally. As technology evolves, so do the tactics employed by malicious actors seeking to exploit vulnerabilities within digital infrastructures.
In light of these developments, it is imperative for organisations across sectors to prioritise cybersecurity measures that can adapt to emerging threats swiftly. This proactive stance will help mitigate risks associated with state-sponsored cyber activities aimed at destabilising political environments worldwide.
By fostering a culture of resilience through continuous improvement in cybersecurity practices, stakeholders can collectively enhance their ability to defend against evolving cyber threats effectively.
