Iranian Hackers Attempt To Influence Biden's Campaign With Stolen Trump Information

Iranian hackers attempted to engage President Joe Biden's campaign by offering information stolen from Donald Trump's campaign, according to the FBI and other federal agencies. They sent unsolicited emails to individuals linked to Biden's campaign, aiming to disrupt the 2024 election. Officials confirmed no recipients responded, preventing the hacked data from being exposed during the election's final months.

The hackers' emails, sent in late June and early July, targeted individuals associated with Biden's campaign before he withdrew. These emails included excerpts from non-public material stolen from Trump's campaign, as stated by a US government announcement. This incident highlights Iran's ongoing efforts to meddle in the upcoming election through a hack-and-leak strategy linked to Tehran by federal agencies last month.

Efforts to Undermine Election Integrity

The FBI, Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency have identified these actions as attempts to undermine voter confidence and sow discord. The Trump campaign revealed on August 10 that it had been hacked by Iranian actors who stole and distributed sensitive internal documents. At least three media outlets received confidential material but have not disclosed any details.

Politico reported receiving emails from an anonymous AOL account named Robert on July 22. This account shared what seemed to be a research dossier on Ohio Sen. JD Vance, the Republican vice-presidential nominee. The document was dated February 23, months before Trump chose Vance as his running mate.

Response from Biden-Harris Campaign

Morgan Finkelstein, spokesperson for Kamala Harris's campaign, stated they have cooperated with law enforcement since learning about the emails targeting Biden's team members. "We're not aware of any material being sent directly to the campaign; a few individuals were targeted on their personal emails with what looked like a spam or phishing attempt," Finkelstein said.

The Justice Department is reportedly preparing charges related to this breach. The Associated Press has noted these developments as part of broader efforts to address foreign interference in US elections.

This situation underscores the persistent threat of foreign interference in American elections. Authorities continue to monitor and respond to such activities to protect electoral integrity.
