Iran Launches Missile Attack on Israel, Prompting Strong Retaliation from Netanyahu Amid Rising Tensions

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to retaliate against Iran following a missile attack on Israel. "Iran made a big mistake tonight and it will pay for it," Netanyahu stated during a late-night Security Cabinet meeting. He described the attack as a failure and warned that Iran would soon learn a painful lesson, similar to past adversaries in Gaza and Lebanon.

Iran Attacks Israel: Netanyahu Vows Retaliation

Iran launched missiles at Israel, causing Israelis to seek shelter while celebrations erupted in Iran. There were no immediate reports of casualties from the attack. Israel claimed to have intercepted many missiles, with US destroyers assisting in the defence. Iran's Revolutionary Guard stated that 90% of their missiles hit their targets, including air and radar bases.

International Reactions and Defence Measures

US President Joe Biden expressed full support for Israel after thwarting the Iranian missile attack. He praised both US and Israeli military efforts and mentioned ongoing discussions about an appropriate response. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan called the attack a significant escalation by Iran. Biden noted that consequences for Iran are still under consideration.

The Israeli military reported no injuries from the missile barrage. Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari confirmed that many missiles were intercepted, though some landed in central and southern Israel. He emphasised the importance of following public safety guidelines. Israel briefly closed its airspace but later resumed normal flight operations after the threat subsided.

US Military Involvement and UN Response

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is in talks with Israeli counterparts following the attack. Pentagon press secretary Major General Pat Ryder mentioned that two US Navy destroyers fired interceptors to defend Israel. Ryder criticised claims of Iran seeking de-escalation, stating that launching numerous missiles indicates intent to hit targets.

The UN Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting to address the escalating Middle East situation. Israel's UN Ambassador Danny Danon urged the council to condemn Iran and label its Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation. He accused Iran of attempting to destroy Israel through multiple fronts.

Regional Tensions and Historical Context

Netanyahu had previously warned Iran, which supports Hezbollah and Hamas. Hezbollah's acting leader, Naim Kassem, vowed continued resistance after the assassination of its long-time chief Hassan Nasrallah and other commanders. Since October 8, Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged fire across the Lebanon border following Hamas's incursion into Israel.

Concerns persist over hostages taken from Israel nearly a year ago, as attention shifts towards Lebanon amid ongoing regional tensions. Friends and family remain anxious about their loved ones' safety as focus diverts from hostages to broader conflicts in the region.
