International Criminal Court Targeted by Sophisticated Cybersecurity Attack During NATO Summit
The International Criminal Court (ICC) recently experienced a "sophisticated" cyberattack, prompting immediate actions to minimise damage. The global tribunal, which faced a similar attack in 2023, confirmed the incident was contained but did not disclose further details about its impact or potential motives.

"A court-wide impact analysis is being carried out, and steps are already being taken to mitigate any effects of the incident," the court stated. This breach occurred last week, coinciding with a NATO summit in The Hague, where security was heightened to prevent cyber threats.
Cybersecurity Measures and Investigations
Fadi El Abdallah, the court's spokesperson, assured that "all necessary measures have been taken to ensure business continuity." However, the ICC did not confirm whether any sensitive data had been compromised. The court is engaged in numerous high-profile investigations globally and has previously been a target for espionage.
In 2022, Dutch intelligence thwarted a Russian spy's attempt to infiltrate the ICC using a false Brazilian identity. This was amid ongoing investigations into alleged Russian war crimes in Ukraine. The court has issued an arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of responsibility for child abductions from Ukraine.
Ongoing Challenges and Sanctions
The ICC continues to face challenges from various quarters. Arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant over actions in Gaza have sparked controversy. Additionally, US President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on the ICC's chief prosecutor Karim Khan in February and recently sanctioned four judges.
The tribunal is still recovering from the previous cyberattack, with wifi yet to be fully restored at its headquarters. Despite these setbacks, the ICC remains committed to its mission of investigating and prosecuting serious international crimes.
