Toronto Indian Mission Commemorates 39th Anniversary of Kanishka Air Disaster
The Indian mission in Toronto commemorated the 39th anniversary of the tragic Air India Kanishka Flight 182 bombing, a devastating event that claimed the lives of 329 individuals, including 86 children. This act of terrorism, one of the deadliest in civil aviation history, occurred on June 23, 1985, when the Montreal-New Delhi flight was destroyed by a bomb 45 minutes before its scheduled landing at London's Heathrow Airport. The majority of the victims were Canadians of Indian descent.

Consul General S. Nath S. participated in a solemn ceremony at the Air India 182 memorial in Humber Park, Etobicoke, laying a wreath to honor the memory of those lost. The Consulate General of India in Toronto shared this moment of remembrance on X, highlighting the continued impact of this tragedy on communities across Canada and beyond.
The bombing has been attributed to Sikh militants as an act of retaliation following Operation Bluestar in 1984, an Indian military action aimed at removing militants from the Golden Temple in Amritsar. This event has since remained a poignant reminder of the dangers posed by terrorism and the importance of vigilance and justice.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also paid tribute to the victims on X, emphasizing the anniversary as a stark reminder of why terrorism must never be tolerated. His message underscored the ongoing grief and loss experienced by families and communities affected by this act of violence.
Further highlighting the significance of this case, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) recently reiterated their commitment to solving this crime. Assistant Commissioner David Teboul described the investigation into the Air India bombing as both the longest and one of the most complex domestic terrorism investigations in Canadian history. Despite the challenges, efforts to bring those responsible to justice continue actively.
This ongoing commitment reflects both countries' dedication to combating terrorism and ensuring that such tragedies are not forgotten. As communities gather to remember those lost, there is a collective resolve to prevent future acts of terror and to uphold values of peace and justice.
