Indian businesspersons visiting London have raised concerns about their safety, citing several incidents of muggings targeting their expensive watches and bags. The issue came to light during discussions between UK shadow foreign secretary David Lammy and members of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in New Delhi.

London Muggings: Indian Businesspeople on Edge

Mugging Incidents Reported

Devin Narang, an Indian renewable energy entrepreneur who chaired the meeting, shared his observations about the muggings. He mentioned that several Indian CEOs have fallen victim to these incidents, including one who had their watch forcibly taken and their wrist slashed in Mayfair. Another individual had their bag snatched while shopping on Oxford Street.

Feeling of Insecurity

Narang expressed that these incidents have created a sense of insecurity among Indian visitors to London. He noted that friends and family who have visited the city in recent years feel the need to be constantly vigilant in upscale areas. The concerns extend beyond Indian nationals, as individuals from other countries have also reportedly stopped wearing expensive accessories and jewelry for fear of theft.

Response from London Authorities

In response to these concerns, a spokesperson for the Mayor of London, who oversees the Metropolitan Police, stated that the police have intensified their efforts to address the rising instances of robberies. Specialized teams have been deployed to proactively target prolific offenders and robbery hotspots.

Pre-Election Visit by UK Opposition Leaders

David Lammy and Jonathan Reynolds, Labour's shadow trade secretary, are currently on a pre-election tour of India. Their visit included a meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, during which they discussed bilateral cooperation and important regional and global developments.

The safety concerns raised by Indian businesspersons highlight the need for enhanced security measures in London to ensure a safe environment for visitors and residents alike. As the city works to address these issues, it remains crucial for individuals to exercise caution and remain vigilant in public spaces.
