India Urges Bangladesh’s New Military Leadership To Restore Peace And Stability After Hasina’s Ouster
India has reached out to Bangladesh's military leadership, led by Army Chief General Waker-us-Zaman, urging for an early restoration of peace, law and order in the country following the recent political upheaval.
According to top government sources, the Modi administration has already made contact with General Waker-us-Zaman, offering support for the stabilization of Bangladesh in the wake of Sheikh Hasina's ouster on Monday, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Current Situation In Bangladesh Outcry
Sheikh Hasina, the ousted Prime Minister of Bangladesh, is currently being treated as a guest in India, and her future stay is at her discretion. Meanwhile, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the opposition's concerns during an all-party meeting, referring to social media posts showing the Bangladesh opposition being highlighted by Pakistani diplomats. The role of Pakistani interference in Hasina's removal is reportedly still under review.
India's Response To Bangladesh's Unrest
In response to the coup and subsequent unrest in Bangladesh, the Modi government is closely monitoring the situation and strategizing to ensure that normalcy is restored in Dhaka through dialogue with the protesting youth. This proactive stance reflects India's commitment to stabilizing its neighbouring country.
Bangladesh's Historical Context
Back in April 2023, Sheikh Hasina expressed her reluctance to contest the January 2024 general elections, only deciding to run after significant pressure from her supporters. Despite being aware of the threats from Islamist groups and foreign regime change agents, Hasina chose not to have a family member succeed her, fearing their potential assassination. Her departure has left a significant void in Bangladesh's political landscape.
Current Challenges
While Hasina is still recovering from her abrupt departure from Dhaka, the Indian government remains committed to supporting its regional ally. The interim government in Bangladesh faces the daunting task of navigating an economic crisis similar to those experienced by Pakistan, Maldives, and Sri Lanka. With high unemployment rates, there is a risk that radical students affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami could turn against the Army if their demands are not met.
Implications for India
Sheikh Hasina's exit has placed India in a precarious position, as the rise of a radical regime could pose a threat from the eastern front, exacerbating regional instability. The Modi government's efforts to stabilize the interim government in Bangladesh are crucial, but they also face challenges from anti-Hasina elements and potential anti-India sentiments in the West.
Given the political turmoil affecting all of India's neighbours except Bhutan, India's strategy will focus on enhancing security and intelligence capabilities while addressing internal threats. This approach aims to insulate the country from cross-border challenges and maintain regional stability amidst escalating unrest.
