India China talks: Ajit Doval tells Wang Yi to show sensitivity on core concerns

In New Delhi, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of a BRICS security officials conclave. India said Doval stressed the need for consistent sensitivity to each other’s core concerns, and that stable, predictable ties can deepen trust. Both sides reviewed the Line of Actual Control situation.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi that both countries must show sensitivity on issues of core concern. The message came as India and China continued efforts to repair strained ties. The two officials also reviewed the overall situation along the Line of Actual Control during their talks.

Doval met Wang Yi in New Delhi on Monday. The meeting took place on the sidelines of a BRICS conclave of security officials. It followed attempts to steady relations after an over four-year military standoff in eastern Ladakh. Officials did not announce any fresh agreements after the discussion.

India-China ties and core concern sensitivity

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the NSA stressed the value of stable engagement. Jaiswal said, "stable, predictable and constructive bilateral relations will contribute to enhanced trust and deeper understanding between the two sides\". Doval also pressed for consistent sensitivity on core issues. Jaiswal did not detail what those core issues were.

Jaiswal said the approach matched India’s broader framework for the relationship. Jaiswal said this aligned with \"our overall approach of mutual sensitivity, mutual interests and mutual respect.\" The spokesperson did not provide further specifics on next steps. The briefing focused on the tone and direction of the talks.

India-China ties and Line of Actual Control review

The meeting included an assessment of conditions along the Line of Actual Control, also called the LAC. This review came as both sides worked to reduce the impact of the Ladakh standoff. The standoff had sharply affected wider cooperation and political contact. The government did not share details of the LAC discussions.

Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong said Wang Yi spoke about cooperation and long-term thinking. Xu said Wang argued the two countries should see ties from both long-term and global views. Xu also reported Wang’s call for action on leader-level consensus. Wang linked cooperation with development and the Global South.

Xu posted that, \"Both sides should take concrete actions to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, promote their respective development and revitalization through cooperation, and accelerate the modernization process of the Global South, he said.\" Xu did not cite any timeline. The post presented this as a shared direction.

Xu also wrote, \"It is imperative to respect each others core interests, properly handle sensitive issues, and place the China-India border issue in an appropriate position, so that it doesnt affect the overall situation of bilateral relations, Xu said on social media.\" The statement linked border management with the wider relationship. It also stressed handling sensitive matters carefully.

In another part of the post, Xu said, \"The two sides should also actively guide all sectors of society to form a correct understanding, and lay a solid public opinion and social foundation for improving bilateral relations, he added.\" The remark pointed to shaping public views in both countries. It did not describe how this would be done.

India-China ties and BRICS cooperation

Xu said China backed India’s role as the rotating chair of BRICS. The post added that China was willing to work with India on the BRICS mechanism. The meeting was held during a BRICS security officials’ conclave, which set the context. No further details were given about planned BRICS initiatives.
