India-Pak heartwarming gesture: When PM Modi touched Pak PM's mother's feet

Lahore, Dec 26: Although the neighbouring countries, India and Pakistan may not share the best of cordial bilateral ties on various aspects, but when it comes to show affection towards each other's mothers, both countries' prime ministers never fail to win hearts.

On Friday, Dec 25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi left everyone by surprise by making an impromptu and a brief stopover at Lahore, on Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif's birthday.

Besides, his surprise and unexpected visit, the other touching moment was when PM Modi touched Sharif's mother's feet, as a mark of respect towards elders.

According to Khaleej Times report, PM Modi yesterday attended Pak PM's grand-daughter's wedding. He touched Sharif's mother feet, when she was present at Sharif's residence, Jati Umrah.

At the lunch-cum-dinner, PM Modi was served traditional Indian vegetarian food like saag with desi ghee, daal and other vegetables. Kashmiri tea was also served.

While expressing about his experience in Pakistan, PM Modi tweeted saying, "Am personally touched by Nawaz Sharif Sahab 's gesture of welcoming me at Lahore airport and coming to the airport when I left."

'Spent a warm evening with Sharif family at their family home. Nawaz Sahab's birthday & granddaughter's marriage made it a double celebration", he further tweeted.

"Nawaz Sharif Sahab's affection towards Atal ji is very touching. He recalled their interactions & asked me to convey his regards to Atal ji", he said in another tweet. [Personally touched by Sharif's welcome: Modi]

PM Modi had accompanied an Indian delegation of 11 members, who had obtained a visa of 72 hours.

It must be recalled that Pak PM Nawaz Sharif had in June 2014, sent a saree to PM Modi's mother Heeraba, shortly, after he attended latter's swearing-in ceremony in the national capital in May 2014.

In May last year, Modi had shared his emotional bond with Sharif on Twitter by saying, "Nawaz Sharif ji told me that he stays in Islamabad but goes to meet his mother once in a week. This time when he was eating with his mother he saw visuals on TV of my mother offering me sweets. The visuals touched both Nawaz Sharif ji and his mother. He told me that after seeing the visuals his mother got very emotional."

This was Modi's first visit to Pakistan after assuming office as India's prime minister. Before that, former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee had visited Pakistan in 2004.
