India, Nigeria Forge Stronger Ties: People-to-People Exchanges, Energy, Mobility in Focus
India and Nigeria have agreed to enhance cooperation in various sectors, including people-to-people exchanges, energy, mobility, power, renewables, transport, healthcare, fintech, agriculture, and security.
In a significant step forward, India and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering their diplomatic relations and expanding cooperation across various sectors. The 6th Joint Commission Meeting between the two nations, held in Abuja, Nigeria, on January 22, 2023, witnessed fruitful discussions between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Nigerian counterpart, Yusuf Tuggar.

Enhancing People-to-People Exchanges and Sectoral Collaboration
Recognizing the long-standing ties between India and Nigeria, Minister Jaishankar emphasized the importance of strengthening people-to-people exchanges and exploring new opportunities in energy, mobility, and other key sectors. The Joint Commission Meeting focused on identifying avenues for collaboration in power, renewable energy, transportation, healthcare, fintech, agriculture, and security.
Expanding Economic Cooperation and Trade
Minister Jaishankar highlighted the significant growth in economic cooperation between India and Nigeria, particularly in trade and investment. Both nations expressed their commitment to exploring new avenues for economic growth and addressing regulatory and policy challenges to facilitate business partnerships.
Addressing Global Challenges through Collaboration
Recognizing the rapidly changing global landscape, Minister Jaishankar stressed the need to build a relationship that aligns with the future needs of two democratic countries with inclusive socio-economic perspectives. Discussions centered on fostering cooperation in green and clean growth, making medicines and healthcare facilities affordable and accessible, and leveraging new technologies to enhance the partnership between India and Nigeria.
Engaging with the Indian Diaspora and Promoting Global South Advancement
During his visit to Nigeria, Minister Jaishankar engaged with the Indian community, unveiling a bust of Mahatma Gandhi and planting a sapling at the Indian High Commission in Abuja. He also addressed the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, emphasizing the importance of the Global South's advancement for planetary progress. Minister Jaishankar highlighted the need for rebalancing and multipolarity to restore global diversity and promote solidarity and self-reliance among nations.
