India-Maldives Cooperation Strengthened Through New Financial Aid And Trade Agreements

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to the Maldives has strengthened India's commitment to the island nation's development. A significant outcome was the signing of a new Line of Credit (LoC) agreement, valued at Rs 4,850 crore. This financial aid aims to support crucial infrastructure and developmental projects across the Maldives.

Additionally, an amendatory agreement was signed to ease the Maldives' annual debt repayment obligations on previous Indian-funded LoCs. This move is expected to provide further financial relief to the nation. The visit also marked the beginning of formal negotiations for the India-Maldives Free Trade Agreement (IMFTA), which seeks to enhance economic ties and boost bilateral trade.

Strengthening Economic Ties

To commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives, a joint commemorative stamp was issued. Several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were also signed during this visit, aiming to deepen cooperation in various sectors. These agreements cover areas such as fisheries, aquaculture, and meteorological collaboration between India's Institute of Tropical Meteorology and the Maldives Meteorological Service.

The sharing of scalable digital governance solutions was another key focus, promoting digital transformation in the Maldives. A MoU was signed for recognising Indian Pharmacopoeia by Maldivian authorities, facilitating smoother trade in pharmaceutical products. Furthermore, a network-level agreement was concluded between NPCI International Payments Limited and the Maldives Monetary Authority to introduce India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to the Maldives.

Development Projects and Security Cooperation

The visit also included inaugurations and handovers of several major development projects funded by India. Among these were 3,300 social housing units in Hulhumale, constructed under India's Buyers' Credit facilities. Additionally, roads and drainage systems in Addu City were inaugurated. Six High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) are set to be launched soon to improve local infrastructure.

India also provided 72 vehicles and various equipment types to bolster Maldivian Defence Ministry's security capabilities. These initiatives reflect India's ongoing support for enhancing security cooperation with the Maldives.

This visit underscores India's dedication to fostering a comprehensive partnership with the Maldives through financial assistance, trade agreements, and collaborative projects across multiple sectors.
