India Bangladesh Ties Face Diplomatic Scrutiny After Dhaka Protests

The ministry of external affairs has summoned Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India, M. Riaz Hamidullah, after protests outside the Indian mission in Dhaka and sharp anti-India comments by a Bangladeshi political leader raised fresh concerns about the security of Indian diplomats.

Hamidullah attended a meeting at the ministry in South Block on Wednesday and left the building in the afternoon, according to people aware of the development. The summons followed sit-ins and demonstrations held for several days outside the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.

The decision to call in the envoy came soon after National Citizens Party leader Hasnat Abdullah issued strong public statements against India. Abdullah warned that Northeast separatist groups could be given shelter and threatened to isolate the Seven Sisters if Bangladesh faced instability, reflecting a long-standing anti-India stance.

The protests near the Dhaka mission and Abdullah's speech together triggered serious questions in Delhi about the environment around Indian diplomatic staff. The summons came close to Bangladesh Liberation Day, or Vijay Diwas, which marks India's victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war and Bangladesh's independence. On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar posted on X, saying, "Greetings to Foreign Affairs Adviser Mohammad Touhid Hossain, the Interim Government and the people of Bangladesh on Bijoy Dibosh."

India Bangladesh ties were highlighted in a different light at the Embassy of Bangladesh in Delhi on Tuesday, where Bangladesh's Victory Day was marked with a cultural programme. High Commissioner M. Riaz Hamidullah spoke about domestic priorities and regional cooperation, stressing the importance of both countries' shared interests for prosperity and security.

Hamidullah underlined Bangladesh's youthful population and future goals while describing the relationship with India as mutually beneficial and centred on development and stability. ANI quoted Hamidullah as saying, "The whole of Bangladesh, and all of us, are committed to fulfilling the aspirations of our people, especially the younger generation. We have a very young demography... We believe our relationship with India is in our shared interest. We have mutual interdependence... We are fully focused on prosperity, peace, and security in the region," capturing the official position on India Bangladesh ties.

People familiar with the situation said the protests outside the Dhaka mission had continued for the past few days before the summons was issued. Against that backdrop, the strong comments by Hasnat Abdullah added another layer of concern for Indian officials watching political messaging in Bangladesh and possible risks to the mission's safety.

The latest diplomatic move shows India balancing concern over protests and hostile speeches with public messages that stress partnership with Bangladesh.
