Hurricane Milton Strikes Florida, Knocking Out Power and Causing Tornadoes with Fatalities

Hurricane Milton swept across Florida, leaving a trail of destruction and power outages for over 3 million people. The storm, which made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane in Siesta Key, caused at least five fatalities and brought heavy rain and tornadoes. Despite the damage, Tampa avoided a direct hit, with Governor Ron DeSantis noting it wasn't "the worst-case scenario."

Impact on Florida's Infrastructure

The storm surge in Sarasota County reached up to 10 feet, while some areas experienced rainfall of up to 18 inches. As the storm moved into the Atlantic, warnings remained for parts of Florida and Georgia. Officials urged residents in affected counties to stay indoors due to hazards like downed power lines and blocked roads.

In Plant City, flooding was severe, with emergency crews rescuing 35 people overnight. City Manager Bill McDaniel described the flooding as unprecedented in his lifetime. Meanwhile, Matlacha Island suffered from both a tornado and storm surge, causing significant damage to buildings.

Rescue Efforts and Damage Assessment

State officials conducted over 40 rescues overnight, with crews continuing door-to-door checks. In Tampa, police rescued 15 individuals from a home damaged by a fallen tree. Col. Mark Thieme emphasized the focus on search-and-rescue operations.

The storm also disrupted utilities; St. Petersburg faced water supply issues due to a water main break. Power outages affected more than 3.4 million homes and businesses across Florida.

Tornadoes and Further Destruction

Several tornadoes touched down during the hurricane, including one that crossed Interstate 75 in the Everglades. Another tornado struck Fort Myers, damaging trees and structures. The Spanish Lakes Country Club near Fort Pierce was particularly hard-hit, with homes destroyed and at least five fatalities reported.

Before Milton's arrival, approximately 125 homes were destroyed, many being mobile homes in senior communities. The hurricane was downgraded to a Category 1 storm as it left Florida near Cape Canaveral.

Community Response and Evacuations

Authorities issued evacuation orders for 15 counties, affecting around 7.2 million people. About 80,000 individuals sought refuge in shelters overnight. Jackie Curnick from Sarasota chose not to evacuate due to logistical challenges but reported her family was safe despite losing power.

Major attractions like Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando remained closed on Thursday. The Tampa airport sustained minimal damage and was expected to reopen by Friday.

Police Chief John Cosby of Anna Maria Island expressed relief as most residents evacuated safely without injuries or deaths. Despite fears of severe flooding, his department remained dry.

The aftermath of Hurricane Milton highlights the resilience of Florida's communities as they begin recovery efforts amidst widespread destruction and ongoing challenges.
