Hundreds Gather to Honour Aland Etienne, Security Guard Killed in New York Office Tower Shooting

Aland Etienne, a security guard killed in a New York office tower shooting, was honoured by hundreds at a memorial service. Remembered for his bravery and dedication, he made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting others.

Hundreds gathered to pay tribute to Aland Etienne, a security guard tragically killed at a Manhattan office tower. The incident occurred when a gunman targeted the National Football League's headquarters on July 28. Etienne, an immigrant from Haiti who arrived in the US in 2017, was remembered as a devoted father and grandfather. He was at his post when the shooting happened.

The memorial service for Etienne, aged 46, took place on Saturday in Brooklyn. He was the last of four victims to be laid to rest. The shooting also claimed the lives of a New York City police officer, an investment firm executive, and a real estate worker. A fifth person was injured before the gunman ended his own life.

Immigrant Contributions Highlighted

Etienne's brother, Smith Etienne, described him as "a humble, steady, kind New York hero." He added, "Aland made the ultimate sacrifice, choosing bravery and selflessness over fear. In his final moments, he acted to protect others." These words highlight Etienne's courage and dedication.

Manny Pastreich, president of Etienne's union 32BJ SEIU, emphasised the significance of immigrants like Etienne. He stated that they are essential workers who form the backbone of New York City. "His legacy will serve as a reminder of the contributions of immigrants, and the sacrifices they make every day," Pastreich noted.

Community Vigil Held

A vigil was organised by security officers from various buildings across New York to honour Etienne's memory. This gathering underscored the community's respect and admiration for his service and sacrifice.

Among those killed was NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who was working a department-approved private security detail that day. Like Etienne, Islam was an immigrant; he was Bangladeshi-American. Their stories reflect the diverse backgrounds of those who serve and protect in New York.

The tragic event has brought attention to the vital role immigrants play in society. It also highlights their contributions and sacrifices in pursuit of better lives for themselves and their families.
