Brampton Hindu Temple Cancels Consular Event Amid High Threat of Violent Protests

The Brampton Triveni temple in Canada has cancelled a consular event due to warnings from Canadian police about a high threat of violent protests. The Life Certificate event, organised by the Consulate General of India, Toronto, was set for November 17 at the temple. This event was part of several camps aimed at issuing Life Certificates for pension purposes.

Hindu Temple Cancels Event Over Protest Threats

On Monday, temple officials announced the cancellation following intelligence from Peel Regional Police indicating an "Extremely High and Imminent Threat Level" of violent protests. "We must make the appropriate decision to cancel to ensure the safety of Brampton Triveni Mandir devotees, community visitors, and the general public," stated the temple authorities. They also expressed sadness over Canadians feeling unsafe visiting Hindu temples in Canada.

Security Concerns and Police Response

The temple authorities urged Peel Police to address threats against the temple and provide security assurances for the Canadian Hindu community and the public. This cancellation follows an incident nearly a week earlier where protestors with Khalistani flags clashed with devotees at a Hindu Sabha temple, disrupting an event co-organised by the temple and Indian Consulate in Brampton.

Peel Regional Police issued a statement on Tuesday clarifying that they had not received any direct threats against places of worship. In a post on X, they acknowledged community concerns about demonstrations and perceived threats but emphasised no direct threats had been reported in the Region of Peel.

Increased Security Measures

To reassure the public, Peel Regional Police have increased their presence around places of worship. They are actively engaging with community leaders, organisations, and local stakeholders to address safety concerns and reduce tensions. As part of these efforts, they have been in contact with the Consul General of India and various community centres to work together on mitigating risks.

The organisers agreed to postpone consular camps to a later date to allow tensions to ease and minimise any negative impact on the community. Last week, the Consulate General of India in Toronto announced cancelling some scheduled consular camps after Canadian security authorities indicated their inability to provide minimum security protection for organisers.

Strained Relations Between India and Canada

Following protests at the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton on November 3, India's Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep concern about the safety of Indian nationals in Canada. India condemned the attack, expecting those responsible for violence to be prosecuted. Relations between India and Canada have been strained since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations last September regarding Indian agents' potential involvement in Khalistan extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar's killing.

New Delhi dismissed Trudeau's accusations as "absurd." Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, was designated a terrorist by India. India maintains that Canada's leniency towards pro-Khalistan elements operating freely from its soil is a significant issue between the two nations.
