The Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts stated that the group is adhering to its original timeline. Paul Dans' departure follows the project's completion of its goal: uniting over 110 leading conservative organisations to create a unified conservative vision aimed at devolving power from the unelected administrative state and returning it to the people.

However, former President Donald Trump has increasingly disavowed and criticised Project 2025, leading to speculation that his campaign influenced Dans' exit. "President Trump's campaign has been very clear for over a year that Project 2025 had nothing to do with the campaign, did not speak for the campaign, and should not be associated with the campaign or the President in any way," Trump campaign advisers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita said in a statement.
