Here's Why An Australian News Presenter Lattouf Sacked Amid Israel-Hamas War Controversy

Antoinette Lattouf, a senior journalist and presenter, found herself terminated from her position as a host on an Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) radio show, causing public outrage.

The host role on the local Mornings show at ABC, which Lattouf, of Lebanese lineage, had been filling for only three days, was abruptly concluded, as reported by BBC.

Why an ABC Presenter was sacked?

The journalist alleges that external pressure, based on political opinion and race, led to her dismissal. In response, a wrongful termination case against the ABC has been initiated by her. Despite believing her performance to be satisfactory, behind the scenes, lobbying against her by pro-Israel groups occurred, accusing her of bias and antisemitism.

The ABC, while denying any external influence, asserts that Lattouf was fired for violating social media guidelines by sharing a post related to the Israel-Gaza conflict from Human Rights Watch.

This is the post she had shared on her Instagram:

Emphasizing impartiality and strict adherence to social media rules, the ABC decided to let her go for sharing one such post. However, Lattouf claims that she was informed that sharing information from reputable sources like Human Rights Watch was acceptable.

The social media post by Antoinette Lattouf followed ABC's own coverage of the report. Alleging that other ABC employees also shared the post, she believes she is being treated differently due to racism. "The difference between them is they are white and I have an Arab background," she told BBC.

While seeking a public apology, compensation, and a return to her on-air role, the claims made by Lattouf are rejected by the ABC. According to ABC, Lattouf was taken off-air because she refused to comply with directions not to post controversial content on social media. They also claimed that she was paid for all five shifts despite being removed from her role.

A familiar face on Australian airwaves and newspapers, Antoinette Lattouf has become a notable figure not just as a reporter but also as an advocate for issues like racism and mental health. She faced criticism earlier for her social media posts on the Israel-Gaza conflict, expressing concerns about the impact on Palestinian civilians and accusing Israel of targeting journalists.

The incident has sparked debates about the independence of Australia's public broadcaster and reignited concerns about its support for culturally diverse staff, especially when facing external pressures.

Concerns were expressed by Human Rights Watch (HRW) to ABC Chair Ita Buttrose, calling it "troubling" that their "factual" material was deemed controversial, potentially impacting Australian journalism. The decision to remove Lattouf was criticized by the media union, and the right to express peaceful views without risking jobs was defended by Minister for Industry Ed Husic. Graffiti appeared on ABC offices, and crowdfunding for Lattouf's legal fees has surpassed $90,000.
