Hamas Releases US-Israeli Hostage Edan Alexander Ahead of Trump’s Middle East Visit
Hamas has released Edan Alexander, the last known Israeli-American hostage held in Gaza, in an effort to advance a ceasefire with Israel and unblock humanitarian supply channels. Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump's envoy, confirmed the development, saying the release was a goodwill gesture to the Trump administration. According to individuals acquainted with the situation, the hostage was released by Hamas' armed wing and is presently en route to Israeli land via the Kissufim border crossing.
Edan Alexander, a 21-year-old Israeli soldier originating from New Jersey, was kidnapped during Hamas' surprise attack on Tel Aviv on October 7, 2023. The militant group's decision to release Alexander is important, given no hostages have been freed since Israel shattered a ceasefire in March.

President Trump plans to visit the Middle East later this week. His special envoy, Adam Boehler, remarked, "We would also ask Hamas to release the bodies of four other Americans who were kidnapped." In a Truth Social post, Trump praised the release, calling it "a step taken in good faith towards the United States and the efforts of the mediators - Qatar and Egypt - to put an end to this very brutal war and return ALL living hostages and remains to their loved ones."
Hamas' October 7 raid killed 1,200 Israelis and abducted 251 more, who were transferred to Gaza. According to local health authorities, Israel's military assault has killed more than 52,800 Palestinians and inflicted massive devastation throughout the Gaza Strip.
