Gun Linked to Killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Matches Shell Casings at Scene, Police Report

The firearm discovered on Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the murder of United Healthcare's CEO, matched shell casings from the crime scene, according to New York City's police commissioner. Fingerprints belonging to Mangione were also found on a water bottle and protein bar wrapper near the location, which he allegedly purchased at a nearby coffee shop while waiting for his target, Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated.

Gun Found in UnitedHealthcare CEO Killing Case

Brian Thompson, aged 50, was fatally shot on December 4 while walking alone to a Manhattan hotel for an investor conference. Surveillance footage showed the shooter fleeing the city quickly, likely by bus. Authorities are uncertain about his movements afterward but suspect he took measures to avoid detection.

Suspect's Background and Arrest

Mangione, 26, was charged with murder following the shooting in midtown Manhattan. He was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after being recognized by a McDonald's customer who alerted an employee. At the time of his arrest, Mangione had a gun similar to the one used in the killing and carried fake identification documents.

In Pennsylvania, Mangione faced initial charges related to gun and forgery offenses. During a brief hearing there, his lawyer Thomas Dickey stated that Mangione would not waive extradition and requested a hearing on the matter. "You can't rush to judgment in this case or any case," Dickey remarked. "He's presumed innocent. Let's not forget that."

Evidence and Motive

Authorities discovered writings in Mangione's possession indicating a disdain for corporate greed. A spiral notebook and a three-page handwritten letter were found when he was apprehended. The letter hinted at clues to the attack being present in the notebook, though its contents have not been disclosed by police.

A law enforcement bulletin revealed that Mangione expressed anger towards "parasitic" health insurance companies and criticised corporate greed and power. He noted that while major corporations' profits rise, life expectancy does not improve. The bulletin also mentioned an incident on July 4, 2023, which might have influenced his actions.

Family Reaction and Suspect's Past

Mangione's family expressed shock and devastation over his arrest. He is the grandson of a notable Maryland real estate developer and philanthropist. Holding a graduate degree in computer science, Mangione previously worked at a car-buying website and lived in Hawaii during early 2022.

During his time in Hawaii, acquaintances reported that he suffered from severe back pain. In his first public statement since his arrest, Mangione shouted about an "insult to the intelligence of the American people" as deputies escorted him into a courthouse.

Manhattan prosecutors are working to extradite Mangione to New York for trial. At his Pennsylvania hearing, it was revealed that when arrested, he possessed bags designed to prevent electronic devices from transmitting signals that could be used for tracking.
