Greek Lawmaker Charged with Felony for Punching Colleague in Parliament

In a recent unsettling event within the Greek Parliament, lawmaker Constantinos Floros has been charged with criminal assault following an alleged physical altercation with a fellow parliamentarian. This incident, which marks a rare breach of decorum in modern Greek political history, occurred on the sidelines of a parliamentary debate on Wednesday.

Lawmaker Faces Assault Charge

Parliament Speaker Constantine Tassoulas announced that Floros could be indicted for this "vile and barbaric attack" under a fast-track procedure, emphasizing that parliamentary immunity does not cover felonies. Floros, who is an independent member after parting ways with the small Spartans party since his election in June 2023, allegedly assaulted a member of the Hellenic Solution party. The altercation led to the victim requiring hospital treatment for a broken nose, as reported by state-run ERT television.

The context of the debate was particularly charged, focusing on whether to lift immunity from prosecution for the leader of the Hellenic Solution party, stemming from a complaint by a relative of Floros. Following the incident, Floros faces charges that could result in up to a 10-year prison sentence if convicted. He was detained by police and awaited a magistrate's hearing on Thursday.

In response to this unprecedented event, Floros was suspended from parliamentary duties for 15 days. The incident drew unanimous condemnation from all political factions within the parliament, highlighting the gravity of the breach in legislative conduct.

In a separate but related development on Wednesday, Greece's Supreme Court took action against the Spartans party, from which Floros had distanced himself. The court excluded the Spartans from participating in the upcoming European Parliament election in June. This decision came after three political parties petitioned against the Spartans for their alleged connections with the extreme-right Golden Dawn party. It's noteworthy that leading members of Golden Dawn were imprisoned in 2020 after being found guilty of operating as a criminal organization.

This series of events underscores a tumultuous period in Greek politics, reflecting both on individual conduct within the hallowed halls of parliament and broader concerns over political affiliations and ideologies at play within the country's political landscape.
