Google Shuts Down GPay In US, Here's Why

Google is discontinuing its standalone Google Pay (GPay) app in the United States. Since June 4, the app has been disabled on the Play Store and will cease to function on existing devices. This change also marks the end of peer-to-peer (P2P) payment functionality in the US.

Going forward, Google will consolidate its mobile payment services within the Google Wallet app. Users will be able to manage their payment methods, make tap-to-pay transactions in stores, and pay online through Google Wallet.

Google Shuts Down GPay In US Here s Why

"Google has invested in enhancing payment experiences, such as improving Google Pay auto fill in Chrome, facilitating public transit payments, and expanding the types of passes stored in Wallet. Further improvements are planned for the future," the tech giant said in a blog post.

Users can download the latest version of the Google Wallet app for Android on the Play Store and manage their cards on the Google Pay website. Existing payment methods linked to GPay will automatically transfer to Google Wallet to ensure a seamless user experience, reported Business Standard. However, P2P payments, a popular feature for activities like splitting bills or sending money to friends, will no longer be available in the US.

Google has not provided a specific reason for shutting down the GPay app, but it is speculated that the move is intended to streamline the user experience and potentially reduce development costs. Additionally, Google Wallet might offer better integration with other Google services, resulting in a more unified platform.

While the GPay app will be discontinued in the US, it will continue to operate in other markets such as India and Singapore.

"For the millions of people who use the Google Pay app in India and Singapore, nothing will change as we continue to build for the unique needs in those countries," Google mentioned in their blog.

Recently, Google introduced its digital wallet in India, where it will function alongside the existing Google Pay app, which remains the primary payment app in the country. The transition from GPay to Wallet in the US was announced by Google in February.
