Google Inactive Account Policy: What You Need to Know

Google has announced that it will be deleting inactive accounts starting on Friday, December 2nd. This policy applies to personal Google accounts that have not been used in at least two years. The company says that this measure is being taken to improve security and protect user data.

Google Inactive Account Policy: What You Need to Know

Why is Google Deleting Inactive Accounts?

Google says that inactive accounts are more likely to be compromised by hackers. This is because they often have weak passwords and lack two-factor authentication. As a result, these accounts could be used to send spam, spread malware, or steal personal information.

How Can I Prevent My Account from Being Deleted?

The easiest way to keep your Google account active is to sign in at least once every two years. You can also do this by sending or scrolling through emails, using Google search, or watching YouTube videos. If you have any existing subscriptions set up through your Google account, these will also count as activity.

Are There Any Exceptions to This Policy?

The only personal Google accounts that will be affected by this policy are those that have not been used for two years or more. Accounts made for organizations, like schools or companies, will not be affected. Additionally, Google says that there are no plans to delete accounts with YouTube videos.

Can I Save Data from My Google Account?

Yes, there are a few tools that you can use to save data from your Google account. Google Takeout allows you to download and export your account data outside of Google at any time. And its Inactive Account Manager lets you choose what would happen to your account and data if it becomes inactive.

If you have a Google account that you haven't used in a while, be sure to sign in before the end of the week to prevent it from being deleted. And if you're concerned about your data, be sure to use the tools provided by Google to back it up.
