Georgia Election Rule Changes by Trump Allies Raise Concerns Over November Chaos
Georgia is once again at the centre of political controversy, as Democrats express concern over potential election interference by Trump-aligned Republicans. They fear that these Republicans are setting the stage to challenge the election results if their candidate loses in November. This apprehension arises from recent changes to election rules by the Georgia State Election Board, now dominated by Trump supporters.

Election Rule Changes Raise Concerns
Earlier this year, Trump allies took control of the Georgia State Election Board after removing the secretary of state, who had resisted Trump's 2020 election challenges. The new board majority has introduced rule changes that worry Democrats and legal experts. These include provisions for a "reasonable inquiry" before certifying results and allowing officials to examine all election-related documents. Critics argue these could enable officials to refuse certification, sparking legal battles during statewide result certification.
State Rep. Saira Draper, an Atlanta Democrat and former voter protection director, believes the goal isn't necessarily to stop certification. "It's about injecting enough confusion to the process that you have a significant segment of the population that will not accept the results," she said. Despite criticism, the board plans to discuss more rule changes soon.
National Implications and Legal Perspectives
The situation in Georgia has national significance as it could influence the presidential race outcome in key swing states. Disrupting election result certification could hinder states from meeting deadlines for electoral vote counting. However, some legal experts consider it unlikely that local boards will refuse to certify votes due to state law requirements. Lauren Miller Karalunas from New York University's Brennan Centre stated, "There is no wiggle room for local certifying officials to take matters into their own hands."
The state board's role is not to determine results but to ensure smooth elections and address complaints. Democratic concerns grew after Trump praised board members at an Atlanta rally, highlighting how voting issues motivate both parties' voters in Georgia.
Republican Perspectives and Legal Challenges
Republicans argue that ensuring vote accuracy is their aim, dismissing concerns about delays or undermining votes. Board member Janelle King said, "The possibility of that happening now that they have more information is just not likely." Meanwhile, grassroots Republicans linked to lawyer Cleta Mitchell have influenced many rule proposals.
Democrats have filed a lawsuit claiming the board exceeded its authority with these rules. A trial is scheduled for October 1. A conservative group also sued, alleging legislative overreach by the board. Opponents seek Republican Gov. Brian Kemp's intervention to remove Trump-aligned members over alleged ethics violations.
Local Officials and Election Preparations
With Election Day approaching and mail ballots already sent to military and overseas voters, county officials argue it's too late for new rules. The Georgia Association of Voter Registration and Election Officials criticises many proposed changes as redundant or potentially obstructive.
Karen Glenn, an official in Butts County, criticised the timing of new rules as "very irresponsible." She noted that implementing them so close to an election could lead to mistakes amid already low public confidence.
Some Republicans claim county boards can refuse certification, but court rulings say otherwise. Karalunas emphasised that this issue has been resolved repeatedly over time.
Certifying Georgia's statewide vote falls to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and Gov. Brian Kemp, not the State Election Board. Raffensperger has consistently urged counties to fulfil their certification duties as required by law: "We fully expect them to do their job."
