Gaza Conflict Deepens Humanitarian Crisis as Ramadan Begins
Palestinians in Gaza observe Ramadan amidst escalating hunger and pressure on Israel due to the worsening humanitarian crisis. Cease-fire talks have stalled, leaving the situation unresolved.
Rafah, March 12, 2023 - As the holy month of Ramadan commences, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip find themselves grappling with an escalating humanitarian crisis and ongoing fighting. Despite efforts by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt to broker a cease-fire, talks have stalled, leaving the region in a state of uncertainty.

Mounting Casualties and Humanitarian Concerns
The Gaza Health Ministry reported that 67 individuals were killed in Israeli strikes within the past 24 hours, bringing the total Palestinian death toll to over 31,112 since the conflict began. While the ministry's count does not distinguish between civilians and combatants, it notes that women and children constitute two-thirds of the fatalities.
The war, which started with Hamas-led militants storming southern Israel in October 2022, has resulted in the displacement of approximately 80% of Gaza's 2.3 million population. Hundreds of thousands of individuals are on the brink of famine, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation.
Calls for a Cease-fire and Humanitarian Aid
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has joined the chorus of voices calling for a new and extended humanitarian cease-fire. Emphasizing Israel's right to defend itself against Hamas, Scholz stressed the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid to reach Gaza. He also expressed opposition to a ground offensive on Rafah, highlighting the potential for further escalation and suffering.
Echoing these sentiments, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged Israel and Hamas to honor the spirit of Ramadan by ceasing hostilities and releasing hostages. Guterres expressed grave concern over the unprecedented level of civilian casualties and destruction in Gaza, warning that an assault on Rafah could worsen the situation.
The Secretary-General emphasized the critical need for swift and substantial delivery of life-saving humanitarian assistance to Gaza. He called for the removal of obstacles hindering the provision of food and other essential aid, emphasizing the global and historical significance of the current crisis.
As the holy month of Ramadan commences, the people of Gaza face a multitude of challenges, including ongoing conflict, a deepening humanitarian crisis, and the threat of further escalation. The international community continues to appeal for a cease-fire and increased humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian population.
