France Elections | Why Did Marine Le Pen's Right-Wing Party Lose? Here Are Three Key Reasons

In the 2024 European Parliament elections, Marine Le Pen's nationalist party, National Rally, was seen sweeping the polls with 31% of the votes, while the coalition of parties led by French President Emmanuel Macron was trounced, receiving less than 15% of the vote share.

It was argued by many that the moment had finally arrived for Marine Le Pen, who had been an aspirant for the French presidency in the last three contests in 2012, 2017, and 2022, as reported India Today.

Marine Le Pen's Right-Wing Party Loss - 3 key reasons

Following President Macron's decision to call a snap parliamentary election in June, the National Rally continued to lead in polls, nearly doubling its support and leaving President Macron reeling. The National Rally received more than 33% of the votes cast in the first round, according to the French Interior Ministry, as reported by India Today. However, after the second and final round of the election on July 7, the results did not favor Marine Le Pen and her National Rally as expected.

The National Rally party suffered a significant defeat in the French parliamentary elections, finishing third behind the ultra-Left coalition and President Emmanuel Macron's centrist bloc. Several factors contributed to the unexpected poll outcome for the resurgent National Rally.

One key reason for the National Rally's defeat could be attributed to the strategic maneuvering of centrist and leftist opponents, who withdrew more than 200 candidates from three-way races to avoid splitting the anti-National Rally vote, as reported by Reuters.

Discontent with the outcome was voiced by National Rally's young president, Jordan Bardella, who accused President Macron of steering France towards instability and aligning it with the so-called "extreme left". Bardella even denounced the "nexus" as an "unnatural alliance" as the results were announced.

The National Rally's overconfidence in projecting an absolute majority might have also alienated voters. Marine Le Pen had confidently predicted that her party would triumph with an outright majority, but this optimism quickly turned into disbelief as the election results unfolded. Criticism of this perceived invincibility was also echoed within the party.

Internal flaws within the National Rally, such as xenophobic remarks made by some candidates, were also highlighted as contributing factors to their defeat. Reports pointed out that the party nominated candidates who had made such remarks, casting doubt on the party's renewed outlook and efforts driven by Marine Le Pen.

Despite the setback, Bardella and Le Pen appear resolute, emphasizing the party's increased parliamentary numbers and their determination to persist until seizing power, as per media reports. Le Pen, once considered too extreme to come close to power, has already hinted at a presidential bid in 2027, viewing this setback as a postponement of her eventual victory, but one that necessitates waiting a few more years for another opportunity.
