First Israeli Hostages Released from Hamas Reunite with Their Mothers After Over 15 Months Apart

The initial moments of joy and disbelief were evident as three Israeli hostages reunited with their mothers after being released under a ceasefire agreement with Hamas. Romi Gonen, Emily Damari, and Doron Steinbrecher met their mothers at a military base near the Gaza border. "My love, you're with me. I'm protecting you. I'm here," said Simona Steinbrecher to her daughter Doron, as shared by the Israeli army.

Middle East Peace Efforts

UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasised the need for peace in the Middle East during a UN Security Council meeting. He highlighted the importance of Israeli troop withdrawal from southern Lebanon and urged for a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Guterres also stressed the necessity of releasing all hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attacks in southern Israel.

Guterres called for unrestricted UN access to Gaza, including support from UNRWA, which Israel seeks to ban. He also urged increased aid deliveries and protection for civilians. The Secretary-General expressed concern over potential annexation of parts of the West Bank by Israel, warning it would violate international law.

Qatar's Aid Initiative

Qatar announced plans to provide post-ceasefire aid to Gaza through a "land bridge" at Kerem Shalom. On Monday, Qatar sent 25 fuel trucks and plans to deliver 3.3 million gallons of fuel over ten days to power hospitals and shelters. The ceasefire agreement allows more aid into Gaza than previously permitted by Israel.

Since the ceasefire began, Egypt reported that over 300 aid trucks have entered Gaza through Kerem Shalom and Nitzana crossings. Some trucks carried food aid labelled for UNRWA, despite Israel's intent to ban the agency from operating in Gaza.

EU Support for Syria

The European Union announced a €235 million aid package for Syria and neighbouring countries hosting Syrian refugees. Hadja Lahbib, European Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management and Equality, highlighted Turkey's crucial role in providing humanitarian corridors for EU assistance to Syria.

Turkey hosts up to 3 million Syrian refugees, making it the largest host country globally. Lahbib emphasised the importance of collaboration between the EU and Turkey to address the region's geopolitical challenges effectively.

Hezbollah's Stance on Ceasefire

Hezbollah praised the Gaza ceasefire as a victory for Palestinians, claiming Israel failed to achieve its objectives. The group criticised the United States for supporting Israel, accusing it of complicity in crimes against Palestinians. Hezbollah stated that resistance remains the only way to deter Israel.

The group acknowledged its losses in opening a front with Israel but maintained that Palestinian resilience could not be broken by force. Hezbollah condemned international silence over civilian casualties during the conflict.

Mother's Ongoing Campaign

Merav Leshem Gonen, mother of freed hostage Romi Gonen, vowed to continue advocating for other hostages' release. Her daughter was kidnapped from a music festival on October 7, 2023. Leshem Gonen has been vocal in her campaign, appearing frequently on Israeli news and travelling abroad.

After reuniting with her daughter near the Gaza border, Leshem Gonen expressed gratitude on Facebook but promised to persist in her efforts. The three women released are expected to remain hospitalised for several days, with their conditions reported as stable.
