Explosions Rock Kabul, Escalating Afghanistan–Pakistan Tensions

A series of loud explosions shook Kabul on 16 March, alarming residents and triggering a rapid security response across the Afghan capital. Witnesses reported hearing powerful blasts followed by the sound of low-flying jets circling above the city, fuelling speculation about a possible cross-border strike amid rising tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

According to local accounts, at least two blasts were reported in Kabul's 5th district, an area not far from several government facilities. Emergency vehicles and security forces were quickly deployed as authorities tried to determine the targets and assess the damage. Some reports suggested that locations close to the Afghanistan Ministry of Defence may have been affected, though officials had not confirmed the exact sites.

The Taliban administration swiftly blamed Pakistan for the incident, accusing Islamabad of violating Afghan airspace. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid claimed that Pakistani forces struck a drug rehabilitation centre in the capital, saying the attack caused casualties among patients receiving treatment. He condemned the incident as a serious breach of humanitarian principles and Afghan sovereignty.

The Kabul bombing occurred against the backdrop of growing conflict along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. In recent weeks, both sides have exchanged accusations over cross-border attacks and militant activity. Islamabad has repeatedly alleged that fighters from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan operate from Afghan territory, launching assaults on Pakistani security forces.

Afghan officials deny those claims and argue that Pakistan uses them to justify military operations inside Afghanistan. Earlier this month, reports indicated that Pakistani forces carried out airstrikes and artillery attacks across the frontier, prompting retaliatory action from Afghan fighters near several border posts.

For residents of Kabul, the latest blasts revived fears of wider conflict spilling into the capital. Many reported hearing aircraft overhead for hours after the initial explosions, while security forces tightened patrols across key areas of the city.

With both governments exchanging sharp accusations and military activity continuing along the border, the Kabul bombing has further deepened uncertainty over stability in the region.
